정도를 말하는 말 — so · such · too · enough · very

so · such · too · enough는 정도를 말하고 뒤에 결과를 붙이는 말입니다. so 형/부 + that 문장은 '너무 ~해서 …했다'(I was so tired that I fell asleep.), such a 형 N + that 문장은 명사 덩어리로 같은 말(It was such a long day that I fell asleep.)입니다. too 형 + to []는 '너무 ~해서 못한다'(too tired to walk)이고, 형 enough + to []는 '…할 만큼 ~하다'(old enough to vote)입니다. so와 such는 2장의 자리(so + 형/부, such + 명사 덩어리)를 그대로 지키고, enough는 형용사 · 부사 뒤, 명사 앞에 섭니다. very는 정도만 세게 하는 중립의 말, so는 말에서 very 대신 쓰는 힘센 말, too는 '안 좋을 만큼'이라는 판단이 든 말입니다. This food is too good.은 어색합니다. 이 장에서는 이 네 모양과 very · so · too의 차이를 봅니다.

1. so 형/부 that S V — 너무 ~해서 …

I was so tired that I fell asleep on the bus. 너무 피곤해서 버스에서 잠들었다. so가 tired의 정도를 세게 말하고, that 문장이 그 결과를 말합니다. 부사도 같습니다. He ran so fast that nobody could follow him. 명사의 양이면 so many · so much입니다. There was so much noise that I could not hear the phone.

The box was so heavy that two people had to carry it.so + 형용사 + that 문장.

She spoke so quietly that we could hardly hear her.so + 부사 + that 문장.

왜 that 문장이 결과가 될까요?

so가 '그만큼'이라는 정도를 가리키고, that 문장이 '그만큼이 어느 만큼인지'를 보여 주기 때문입니다. 잠들 만큼 피곤했다는 말에서, 피곤한 정도를 잠든 결과로 잽니다. 그래서 so … that의 that 문장은 정도의 눈금이면서 결과입니다. 말에서는 that을 빼기도 합니다(I was so tired I fell asleep.). 글에서는 that을 둡니다.

2. such a 형 N that S V — such의 자리

같은 뜻을 명사 덩어리로 말하면 such입니다. It was such a long day that I fell asleep. 2장에서 본 대로 such는 명사 덩어리 앞, so는 형용사 · 부사 앞입니다. such a long day이지 so a long day가 아닙니다. 복수와 셀 수 없는 명사 앞에는 a가 없습니다. They were such kind people that everyone liked them. It was such bad weather that the flight was canceled.

so와 such의 자리가 바뀌었습니다.

so를 명사 덩어리 앞에 두면 a가 형용사 뒤로 갑니다. 격식 있는 옛 모양이고, 보통 글에서는 such a beautiful woman입니다.

such … as. 선생님 노트의 such a man as is handsome, tall, smart, and kind는 such … as(…같은)의 모양입니다. 결과(that)가 아니라 '어떤 종류의'를 말합니다. 격식 있는 글에 보이고, 보통 글에서는 관계사절(a man who is …)로 씁니다.

같은 일을 so 형 that …과 such a 형 N that …으로 한 번씩 쓴 영어 문장 짝 하나를 쓰세요(어제 겪은 일로). 각 문장 뒤에 정도를 말하는 말(so · such)이 바로 앞에 선 말과, that 문장이 말하는 결과를 우리말로 적으세요.

so와 such의 자리, that 문장이 결과를 말하는지, a의 유무를 봐 드립니다.

3. too 형 to [] — 너무 ~해서 못한다

He was too tired to walk. 너무 피곤해서 걷지 못했다. too는 '지나치게'이고, to []는 그래서 하지 못하는 일입니다. too … to []에는 못한다는 뜻이 들어 있습니다. 누가 못하는지를 말하려면 for를 씁니다. The box was too heavy for me to lift. 같은 뜻을 so … that으로 풀면 못한다를 따로 씁니다. He was so tired that he could not walk.

The coffee is too hot to drink.너무 뜨거워서 마실 수 없다. = so hot that I cannot drink it.

She is too young to drive.운전하기에는 너무 어리다.

The print was too small for the old man to read.노인이 읽기에는 너무 작았다. for + 사람.

too 뒤에 that을 쓰거나, to [] 뒤에 it을 또 썼습니다. drink의 '무엇을'은 주어 coffee이므로 비워 둡니다.

왜 too … to에는 '못한다'가 들어 있을까요?

too가 '어떤 일을 하기에 지나치다'라는 뜻이기 때문입니다. to []는 그 '어떤 일'입니다. 걷기에 지나치게 피곤하다 = 걷지 못한다. 그래서 too … to []는 not을 쓰지 않고도 부정의 뜻을 냅니다. 이것이 very와 다른 점입니다. very tired는 '아주 피곤하다'일 뿐 걷는 일과 무관합니다. too tired to walk는 걷는 일에 견주어 지나치다는 판단입니다(5절).

4. 형 enough to [] · enough N — enough의 자리

She is old enough to vote. 투표할 만큼 나이가 들었다. enough는 '…할 만큼 충분히'이고 to []가 그 일입니다. too … to와 반대로 할 수 있다는 뜻입니다. 자리를 조심합니다. enough는 형용사 · 부사 뒤, 명사 앞에 섭니다. old enough, fast enough이지만 enough money, enough time입니다. enough old는 틀립니다.

too 형 to []가 든 영어 문장 하나와 형 enough to []가 든 영어 문장 하나를 쓰세요(내가 할 수 없는 일과 할 수 있는 일로). 각 문장을 so … that … (can/cannot)으로 바꾸어 다시 쓰고, 못한다 · 할 수 있다 가운데 어느 뜻인지 적으세요.

too … to에 not을 겹쳐 쓰지 않았는지, enough의 자리가 형용사 뒤 · 명사 앞인지, so … that으로 바꾼 문장이 뜻을 지키는지 봐 드립니다.

5. very · so · too 가르기

세 말은 모두 정도를 세게 하지만 뜻이 다릅니다. very는 정도만 높입니다. It is very hot.은 덥다는 사실입니다. so는 말에서 very 대신 쓰는 힘센 말이고(I'm so tired!), 뒤에 that 문장이 올 수 있습니다. too는 '안 좋을 만큼 · 지나치게'라는 판단이 든 말입니다. It is too hot.은 불평입니다(개론 9장 2절). 그래서 좋은 것에는 too를 쓰지 않습니다. This food is too good.은 어색하고, This food is very good. 또는 so good입니다.

too는 '안 좋을 만큼'이라 좋은 것과 어울리지 않습니다. 문법책은 이런 문장을 어색한 것으로 봅니다.

too의 다른 뜻과 too much. 문장 끝의 too는 '또한'입니다(I like it, too.). too much · too many · too little · too few는 양이 지나치다는 뜻이고 부정의 느낌이 있습니다(He drinks too much. They study too little.). 말에서는 He isn't too bright.처럼 too를 very의 뜻으로 부정문에 쓰기도 하지만, 글에서는 very를 씁니다.

6. 가장 깊은 곳: 정도 + 뒤의 말 = 결과

so · such · too · enough는 모두 '정도'를 말하고, 뒤에 붙는 말이 그 정도의 '결과'를 말합니다. so와 such 뒤에는 that 문장, too와 enough 뒤에는 to []입니다. 그리고 too에는 못한다가, enough에는 할 수 있다가 들어 있습니다. 네 모양을 한 표로 두면 서로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있습니다.

자리가 다릅니다. so는 형용사 · 부사 앞(so tired that, so fast that), such는 명사 덩어리 앞(such a long day that, such kind people that)입니다. 둘 다 that 문장이 결과를 말합니다. so a long day ✗, such long ✗. 격식 있는 옛 모양 so long a day that도 있습니다.

too … to []는 무슨 뜻인가요?

'너무 ~해서 못한다'입니다(too tired to walk = so tired that I cannot walk). 못한다가 too … to에 들어 있으므로 not을 쓰지 않습니다. 누가 못하는지는 for + 사람(too heavy for me to lift)입니다. too … that은 없고, to [] 뒤에 주어와 같은 것을 또 쓰지 않습니다(too hot to drink it ✗).

enough는 어디에 서나요?
