더 — -er than, more … than

짧은 말에는 -er(taller than), 긴 말에는 more … than(more useful than)입니다. 한 음절과 -y로 끝나는 두 음절은 -er, 그 밖은 more이고, 헷갈리면 more를 씁니다. good · bad · far · little · many/much는 better · worse · farther/further · less · more로 따로 외웁니다. than 뒤에는 같은 종류끼리 옵니다. The climate of Korea is milder than that of Japan. 부사(more closely), 명사(more books), 동사(talk more)도 견줍니다.

1. -er와 more 고르기 — 짧으면 -er, 길면 more

한 음절(tall, big, nice)은 -er, 두 음절 가운데 -y로 끝나는 말(happy, easy, busy)은 y를 i로 바꾸어 -er, 그 밖의 두 음절(careful, useful, famous)과 세 음절 이상(beautiful, expensive)은 more입니다.

세 음절 이상moremore beautiful, more expensive, more important

This road is wider than that one. This map is more useful than that one.

짧으면 -er, 길면 more.

This road is more wider than that one. This map is usefuler.

2. 따로 외우는 모양 — good · bad · far · little · many

3. than 뒤의 짝 — than I · than me · than that of

She is taller than I am.은 than 뒤에 문장(I am)이 이어진 것이고, She is taller than me. 둘 다 표준 영어입니다. than I (am)은 격식 있는 글, than me는 말과 보통 글에서 흔합니다(개론 3장). She likes you more than I do.(내가 너를 좋아하는 것보다) / She likes you more than me.(나를 좋아하는 것보다).

The climate of Korea is milder than that of Japan.

The population of Seoul is larger than that of Busan.

서울의 인구 : 부산의 인구. that = the population.

The population of Seoul is larger than Busan.

The prices here are higher than those in my hometown.

복수 prices에는 those.

It is warmer today. (than yesterday)

than과 then. than은 비교, then은 '그때 · 그다음'입니다.

Venus approaches the earth more closely than any other planet.

동사의 양동사 + more · less … thanWomen talk more than men do. He eats less than before.

She arrived earlier than the others. He runs faster than his brother.

She explained it more clearly than the teacher did.

5. less와 fewer

'덜'은 less입니다. less는 more의 반대이고 형용사 · 부사 · 명사 · 동사에 다 씁니다. less expensive, less often, less money, eat less. 숫자 · 시간 · 돈의 양은 하나의 덩어리로 보아 less를 씁니다. less than ten minutes, less than five dollars.

그때에는 not as … as를 씁니다(6장). He is not as tall as his brother. less는 expensive, useful처럼 긴 형용사와 어울립니다. This model is less expensive.

-er · more · less · fewer의 모양이 맞는지, than 뒤에 같은 종류를 두었는지 봐 드립니다.

The climate of Korea is milder than that of Japan.

한 음절(taller, bigger)과 -y로 끝나는 두 음절(happier, easier)은 -er, 그 밖의 두 음절과 세 음절 이상(more useful, more beautiful), -ly 부사(more quickly)는 more입니다. quiet · simple · clever · narrow는 둘 다 됩니다. -er와 more를 겹치지 않습니다(more taller ✗).

good/well → better, bad/badly → worse, far → farther/further, little → less, many/much → more, old → older/elder(명사 앞에만), late → later/latter입니다. more better ✗.

부사는 harder(같은 모양) · more closely(-ly), 명사의 양은 more · less · fewer + 명사(more books), 동사의 양은 동사 + more · less(talk more than men do)입니다. Venus approaches the earth more closely than any other planet.

수 · 시간 · 돈의 양은 less than(less than an hour)입니다. 짧은 형용사의 '덜'은 less tall보다 not as tall as가 자연스럽습니다.
