그런 것 같다, 그렇다고들 한다 — seem · appear · happen to · be said to
It seems that she knows him.과 She seems to know him. 앞 틀은 it을 앞에 두고 문장(that S V)을 뒤에 붙이고, 뒤 틀은 사람을 주어로 세우고 to []를 씁니다. 같은 때는 to [], 진행은 to be ~ing, 앞선 때는 to have pp입니다. appear, be likely, turn out, happen, be said to, be believed to도 같은 틀입니다. (She seems that she knows him. ✗). 그리고 to be honest, to begin with처럼 문장 앞에서 말하는 사람의 태도를 덧붙이는 굳은 to []가 있습니다.
1. It seems that ↔ seems to — 같은 뜻, 다른 주어
It seems that Mina knows the answer.
Mina seems to know the answer.
(The plan seems good.).
| It … that S V | S … to [] | 풀이 |
|---|---|---|
| It seems that he is tired. | He seems (to be) tired. |
| It appears that the shop is closed. | The shop appears to be closed. | appear = seem |
| It seems that they are waiting. | They seem to be waiting. | 진행은 to be ~ing(5장) |
Mina seems that she knows the answer. It seems like she knows., She seems like she knows.
영어권의 연구는 원어민이 앞 문장과 이어지는 주어를 골라 She seems to be …
2. seems to have pp —
| S … to [] | It … that S V | 때 |
|---|---|---|
| He seems to know that. | It seems that he knows that.
| He seemed to know that. | It seemed that he knew that.
| He seems to have known that. | It seems that he knew that. / It seems that he has known that.
| He seemed to have known that. | It seemed that he had known that.
to have pp는 that 문장으로 풀 때 두 가지가 됩니다. He seems to have known that.은 It seems that he knew that.(전에 알았다)도 되고 It seems that he has known that.(전부터 지금까지 안다)도 됩니다.
The thief appears to have entered through the back door.
She seems to have been crying.
The building appears to have been repainted recently.
3. be likely · turn out · happen to — 같은 틀을 쓰는 다른 말들
형용사 likely, unlikely, certain, sure, bound와 동사 turn out, happen, prove, tend입니다.
| It … that S V | S … to [] | 뜻 |
|---|---|---|
| It is likely that it will rain. | It is likely to rain. |
| It is certain that she will win. | She is certain to win. |
| It turned out that the map was wrong. | The map turned out to be wrong. |
| It happened that I met her at the station. | I happened to meet her at the station. |
| It proved that the plan was useful. | The plan proved to be useful. |
I happened to meet her. (Prices tend to rise in spring.). 앞선 때이면 to have pp입니다(The map turned out to have been copied from an older one.).
일 전체를 말하므로 It … that S V로 쓸 수 있고, 그 일의 주어를 앞에 세워 S … to []로도 쓸 수 있습니다. want나 decide는 다릅니다. 어느 동사가 이 틀을 쓰는지도 결국 사용법입니다. seem, appear, happen, turn out, prove, be likely, be certain, be said, be believed가 대표적입니다.
4. be said to — 전하는 틀에서 때 맞추기
They say that she was a teacher.를 it으로 말하면 It is said that she was a teacher. She is said to have been a teacher.
| It is said that … | S is said to …
|---|---|---|
| It is said that she is a good teacher. | She is said to be a good teacher. |
| It is said that she is writing a book. | She is said to be writing a book. |
| It is said that she was a member of the club. | She is said to have been a member of the club. |
| It was said that she had left the town. | She was said to have left the town. |
say 말고도 believe, think, consider, report, know, expect, suppose, estimate가 이 틀을 씁니다. 받는 쪽이 들어가면 to be pp, to have been pp입니다(The bridge is believed to have been built in the 1600s.). She is said that she was …
The old well is thought to be more than two hundred years old.
The painting is believed to have been stolen during the war.
The company is expected to announce the results next week.
5. 문장을 꾸미는 굳은 to [] — to be honest, to begin with
| 굳은 to [] | 뜻 | 보기 |
|---|---|---|
| to be honest / to be frank (with you) / to tell (you) the truth | 솔직히 말하면 | To be honest, I did not enjoy the film. |
| to begin with / to start with | 우선, 먼저 | To begin with, the room was too small. |
| to make matters worse | 설상가상으로 | To make matters worse, it started to rain. |
| to be sure | 물론, 확실히 | To be sure, the plan has some risks. |
| needless to say / strange to say / to say the least | 말할 것도 없이 / 이상하게도 / 줄잡아 말해도 | Needless to say, we were late. |
| not to mention / not to speak of | ~는 말할 것도 없고 | The hotel was expensive, not to mention the food. |
| so to speak / to sum up | 말하자면 / 요약하면 | To sum up, the project succeeded. |
To be honest, I did not enjoy the film.
seem, appear, be likely, be said to는 모두 '조심스럽게 전하는 말'입니다.
|---|---|---|
| It seems / is said that S V | 새 화제를 꺼낼 때. | It seems that the old mill was once a school. |
| S seems / is said to [] | 이미 나온 화제를 이어 갈 때. | The mill is said to have closed in 1950. |
The old mill is said to have been built by a merchant, and it appears to have served as a school for a time.짝은 is said와 appears입니다.
② 짝이 seem, appear, be likely, be said, be believed, turn out, happen이면 '전하는 틀'임을 알아봅니다. ③ 뒤가 that 문장인지 to []인지 보고, to []이면 첫 단어(have, be)에서 때와 받는 쪽을 읽습니다(5장 6절).
