(She is good at drawing.). 동사 · 형용사가 고른 전치사(apologize for, insist on, afraid of) 뒤에도 ~ing를 씁니다. look forward to · be used to · object to의 to는 전치사 to이므로 뒤에 ~ing가 옵니다(I'm looking forward to seeing you.). by · on · without · instead of · despite처럼 뜻을 더하는 전치사 뒤의 ~ing는 방법 · 때 · 대신 같은 뜻을 보탭니다(by reading every day — 날마다 읽음으로써). 전치사 뒤에는 that 문장이 바로 오지 못합니다(proud of that she won ✗). in that · except that 같은 몇몇 굳은 짝만 예외입니다. (She is proud of winning the prize.).

1. 전치사 뒤에는 ~ing

in · at · of · for · about · with · by · without 주어 · 목적어 · 보어 자리에는 to []도 오지만, 전치사 뒤에는 ~ing를 씁니다(good at drawing / good at to draw ✗).

I'm interested in to learn Japanese.

He lost the game because of make a mistake. ✗ → because of making a mistake. because of · instead of · in spite of처럼 여러 낱말로 된 전치사도 뒤는 명사 자리입니다. (I had no choice but to wait. / She does nothing except complain.).
after · before 뒤의 ~ing. after finishing dinner, before leaving의 after · before는 접속사로도 쓰이는 말입니다. 이 장에서는 by · on · without · instead of · despite처럼 전치사로만 쓰는 말을 다룹니다.

어떤 동사와 형용사는 함께 쓰는 전치사가 정해져 있습니다(개론 9장). apologize는 for, insist는 on, succeed는 in, afraid는 of와 함께 씁니다.

3. 전치사 to + ~ing

동사 앞의 to는 to []의 to이고(I want to see you.), 명사 앞의 to는 전치사입니다(I went to the park.). look forward to(~을 기대하다) · be used to(~에 익숙하다) · object to(~에 반대하다)의 to는 전치사입니다. I look forward to the party. I want to the party.는 말이 되지 않으므로 want의 to는 to []의 to입니다(개론 10장 · to 부정사 2장).

be used to · get used toShe is used to getting up early.

used to []와 be used to ~ing는 어떻게 다를까요?

I used to walk to school.(예전에는 걸어서 학교에 다녔지만 지금은 아니다)의 used to는 '예전에는 ~했지만 지금은 아니다'라는 뜻이고(시제 4장), 이 to는 to []의 to이므로 뒤에 원형이 옵니다. I am used to walking to school.(걸어서 학교에 다니는 데 익숙하다)의 to는 전치사이므로 ~ing가 옵니다. This knife is used to cut bread.(이 칼은 빵을 자르는 데 쓰인다)는 be used(쓰이다) 뒤에 '~하기 위해서'의 to []가 붙은 것입니다.

by ~ing~함으로써(방법)You can improve your English by reading every day.
on (upon) ~ing~하자마자, ~할 때On arriving at the hotel, she called her parents.
in ~ing~할 때, ~하는 데Be careful in choosing your words.
without ~ing~하지 않고He answered without thinking.
instead of ~ing~하는 대신Let's walk instead of taking the bus.
despite · in spite of ~ing~하는데도Despite starting late, we arrived on time.
besides ~ing~하는 것 말고도Besides teaching math, she coaches the chess club.
On arriving at the hotel, she called her parents.는 As soon as she arrived at the hotel, she called her parents. 말에서는 as soon as나 when을 더 많이 씁니다. upon도 같은 뜻으로 씁니다. (Once she arrived at the hotel, she called her parents.).
Despite of starting late ✗ → Despite starting late 또는 In spite of starting late. despite는 혼자서 전치사이고, in spite of는 세 낱말이 모여 전치사 하나가 됩니다. 둘 다 뜻은 '~에도 불구하고, ~하는데도'로 같고, 뒤는 명사 자리이므로 명사나 ~ing가 옵니다(despite the rain, in spite of starting late).
Despite starting late, we arrived on time. = Although we started late, we arrived on time. / In spite of the rain, the game went on. = Though it rained, the game went on. though는 although와 같고, even though는 '~인데도'를 더 힘주어 말합니다(Even though he was tired, he kept working.). 글에서는 despite the fact that + 문장도 씁니다(5장).

전치사 뒤에는 명사가 오고, that 문장은 바로 오지 못합니다(개론 9장 · 11장). in that(~라는 점에서) · except that(~라는 것만 빼면) · save that 같은 몇몇 굳은 짝 뒤에만 that 문장이 올 수 있습니다(This plan is better in that it costs less.). (She is proud of winning.), 다르면 ~ing 앞에 주어를 씁니다(She is proud of her son winning., 5장).

She is proud that she won the prize. She is proud of winning the prize.proud of that she won ✗

He insisted that he pay the bill.He insisted on paying the bill.insisted on that he pay ✗
Although it rained, we went hiking.Despite the rain, we went hiking.Despite it rained ✗

그래서 영어는 문장의 내용을 전치사 뒤에 넣을 때 동사를 ~ing로 바꾸어 명사 덩어리로 만들거나, the fact 같은 명사를 먼저 쓰고 that 문장을 그 내용으로 붙입니다(despite the fact that it rained). in that · except that은 전치사와 that이 한 덩어리로 굳은 짝이므로 예외입니다.

① 빈칸 앞의 말이 전치사인지 봅니다. in · at · of · for · about · by · without · instead of · despite는 전치사입니다. 말이 되면 전치사 to입니다(look forward to · be used to · object to). 원형 · to []는 오지 못하고, that 문장도 바로 오지 못합니다(in that · except that은 예외).

전치사 뒤는 명사 자리여서 원형도 to []도 오지 못합니다(interested in learning, without saying, instead of complaining).

succeed to find와 succeed in finding 가운데 바른 것은 무엇인가요?

succeed in finding입니다. succeed는 전치사 in과 함께 쓰고, 전치사 뒤에는 ~ing를 씁니다. 뜻이 비슷한 manage는 to []를 고릅니다(managed to find).

look forward to의 to가 전치사인지 어떻게 아나요?

I look forward to the party. 그래서 뒤에 동사의 뜻이 필요하면 ~ing입니다(look forward to seeing you).

used to walk와 be used to walking은 어떻게 다른가요?

used to walk는 '예전에는 걸어 다녔지만 지금은 아니다'라는 뜻이고, 이 to는 to []의 to이므로 뒤에 원형이 옵니다. be used to walking은 '걸어 다니는 데 익숙하다'이고, to가 전치사이므로 ~ing가 옵니다.

On arriving at the hotel

On (Upon) + ~ing는 As soon as + 문장과 뜻이 같고 주로 글에서 씁니다.

She is proud of that she won.

전치사 뒤에는 that 문장이 바로 오지 못하기 때문입니다(in that · except that 같은 굳은 짝만 예외). She is proud of winning. She is proud that she won.
