목적과 결과를 또렷하게 — in order to · so that · so … that · enough · too
이 뜻을 더 분명히 하고 싶으면 in order to []나 so as to []를 씁니다. 같은 뜻을 to []로 짧게 말하는 것이 … enough to []와 too … to []입니다.
1. in order to · so as to — '~하기 위해서'를 분명히
Mina left early to catch the train.
Mina left early in order to catch the train.
Mina left early so as to catch the train.같은 뜻입니다. so as to도 목적을 분명히 하는 말이며, in order to보다 조금 덜 쓰입니다.
부정은 in order not to [], so as not to []입니다. to []만으로는 부정의 목적을 말하기 어렵습니다(She left early not to miss the train. 그래서 '~하지 않기 위해서'는 거의 언제나 in order not to나 so as not to로 씁니다.
We left at six in order not to miss the first bus.
In order to reduce noise, the library moved the printers downstairs.
He stopped to rest.
2. so that + 주어 + can — 주어가 다를 때에는 문장을 하나 더
I gave Sujin my address to contact me. ✗
I gave Sujin my address so that she could contact me.
so that 뒤에는 can, could, will, would가 자주 옵니다. 부정은 so that … not입니다.
|---|---|---|
| I study hard to pass the exam. | 주어 I (같음) | to [] |
| I study hard so that my parents will be proud. | my parents (다름) | so that + S + will |
| She spoke slowly so that everyone could follow. | everyone (다름) | so that + S + could |
| We closed the windows so that the rain would not come in. | the rain (다름) | so that + S + would not |
(I went to the library so that I could study in silence.). (I left early so I would not be late.), 격식 있는 글에서는 in order that을 쓰기도 합니다.
'할 수 있도록'(can, could), '하게 되도록'(will, would)은 아직 이루지 않은 일을 나타냅니다. He shouted so that everyone heard him.(그래서 모두가 들었다 — 결과)과 He shouted so that everyone could hear him.(모두가 들을 수 있도록 — 목적)의 차이입니다.
3. so … that · such … that — 그래서 일어난 일
He is so rich that he can buy any car he wants.
She ran so fast that nobody could catch her.
Robbery was such a big problem that the architects built hidden rooms.
뒤에 명사가 있으면 such, 없으면 so입니다. such 뒤에는 a, an이 명사 앞에 옵니다(such a big problem). 셀 수 없는 명사와 여럿이면 a 없이 씁니다(such bad weather, such heavy boxes). many, much, few, little은 형용사처럼 so를 씁니다(so many people that …).
|---|---|---|
| 형용사 · 부사만 | so … that | The box was so heavy that two people carried it. |
| (형용사 +) 명사 | such (a) … that | It was such a heavy box that two people carried it. |
| many · much · few · little + 명사 | so … that | There were so many boxes that we needed a truck. |
so that은 목적(뒤에 can, will), so … that은 결과입니다. He spoke slowly so that everyone could follow.(목적) / He spoke so slowly that everyone fell asleep.(결과).
4. enough to · too … to — 같은 뜻을 to []로 짧게
so … that으로 말한 결과를 to []로 짧게 말할 수 있습니다. '할 수 있다'는 결과는 enough to []로, '할 수 없다'는 결과는 too … to []로 줄어듭니다.
| so … that (문장 둘) | to [] (문장 하나) | 뜻 |
|---|---|---|
| He is so rich that he can buy a boat. | He is rich enough to buy a boat. |
| You are so weak that you cannot lift this stone. | You are too weak to lift this stone. |
| The ice was so thick that we could walk on it. | The ice was thick enough to walk on.
| The plate was so hot that I could not touch it. | The plate was too hot to touch. |
enough는 형용사와 부사 뒤에, 명사 앞에 옵니다(rich enough, fast enough, enough money). too는 언제나 형용사와 부사 앞입니다. too … to []에는 '할 수 없다'는 부정이 숨어 있고, enough to []에는 '할 수 있다'는 긍정이 숨어 있습니다. 그래서 too … to []를 '너무 ~해서 ~하다'로 읽으면 뜻이 뒤집힙니다. too hot to touch는 만질 수 없다는 말입니다.
The stone is too heavy for me to lift.
The stone is too heavy for me to lift it. ✗
lift의 '무엇을'은 주어인 stone이므로 it을 다시 쓰지 않습니다(8장의 easy to read와 같은 모양).
|---|---|---|---|
| 목적 | 주어와 같음 | to [] · in order to [] | We saved money (in order) to buy a tent. |
| 주어와 다름 | so that + S + can/will | We saved money so that our children could travel. | |
| 부정 | in order not to · so that … not | We saved money so as not to borrow any. | |
| 결과 | 주어와 같음 | enough to · too … to | We were too tired to cook. |
| 누구든 | so … that · such … that | We were so tired that our neighbor cooked for us. |
짧은 모양(to [], too … to)은 읽기 빠르지만 주인과 때를 문맥에 맡기고, 긴 모양(so that, so … that)은 주어와 동사를 갖추어 주인과 때를 분명히 합니다.
Each sample was heated for ten minutes in order to remove any moisture.연구 글은 목적을 in order to로 분명히 합니다.
The results were recorded twice so that any error could be found later.
The sample was too small to support a general conclusion.
The response was so strong that the survey was repeated in three other cities.
The town widened the road in order to reduce accidents, but the road became so busy that the noise forced many families to move away.짝은 widened, became, forced 셋입니다(but, that). in order to reduce는 목적, so busy that …
② to []가 보이면 짝이 아닌 자리인지 확인하고, in order to이면 목적으로 읽습니다. ③ so that이 보이면 뒤의 can, will을 확인해 목적으로 읽고, so · such가 형용사나 명사 앞에 있으면 that 뒤를 결과로 읽습니다.
I gave her my number to call me. ✗ → so that she could call me. to []의 주인이 주어와 다르면 so that입니다.
It was so a big problem that … ✗ → such a big problem that …
He is enough rich to buy it. ✗ → rich enough to buy it. enough
The box is too heavy to carry it. ✗ → too heavy to carry.
too hot to drink을 '너무 뜨거워서 마신다'로 읽는 것.
She left early so that she did not miss the bus.(결과처럼 들림) → 목적이면 so that she would not miss the bus.

in order to는 to []와 어떻게 다른가요?
부정의 목적은 거의 언제나 in order not to나 so as not to로 씁니다.
so that은 언제 쓰나요?
I gave Sujin my address so that she could contact me. 뒤에는 can, could, will, would가 자주 옵니다.
so … that과 such … that은 어떻게 가르나요?
뒤에 명사가 있으면 such, 없으면 so입니다. so hot that / such a hot day that. many, much, few, little 앞에는 so를 씁니다. so that(목적)과 so … that(결과)은 so의 자리가 다릅니다.
지나치게 뜨겁다는 말에는 '그래서 마시기에 맞지 않다'가 들어 있습니다. too hot to drink = so hot that one cannot drink it.
The stone is too heavy for me to lift it.
The stone is too heavy for me to lift.
긴 모양(so that, so … that)은 주어와 동사를 갖추어 누가 언제 하는 일인지 분명히 하고, 짧은 모양(to [], too … to)은 그것을 문맥에 맡기기 때문입니다. 주어가 다르면 so that이 필요하고, 결과를 힘주어 말하려면 so … that이 알맞습니다.
