~ing와 ~ing, to []와 to []입니다. both A and B · not only A but also B 같은 함께 다니는 접속사 뒤의 A와 B도 같은 모양, 같은 자리입니다.
She likes reading novels and writing reviews.~ing와 ~ing를 and로 묶었습니다.
The legs of a heron are longer than those of a duck.다리와 다리를 견줍니다. those = the legs이고, than a duck는 틀립니다.
Standing only four feet tall, Leo could not reach the top shelf.
나란히 잇는 접속사(and · but · or · nor · so · yet · for)는 등급이 같은 것끼리 잇습니다(개론 7장 3절). 낱말은 낱말과(bread and butter), 덩어리는 덩어리와(in the morning or in the evening), 문장은 문장과(She left, and he stayed.)
|---|---|---|
| 낱말과 낱말 | salt and pepper / slowly but surely / tea or coffee | 명사와 명사, 부사와 부사 |
| 덩어리와 덩어리 | on the table or under the chair / to read and to write / reading and writing | 전치사 덩어리끼리, to []끼리, ~ing끼리 |
| 문장과 문장 | The rain stopped, and the sun came out.
| 덩어리를 만드는 접속사의 덩어리끼리 | {when it rains} or {when it snows} | 접속사 덩어리끼리 |
She bought apples and pears and left.
The shop sells bread, cakes, and cookies.
You can pay at the counter or on the website.
We waited an hour, but the bus never came.
- salt and pepper 의 and가 잇는 것은?
- The rain stopped, and the sun came out. 의 and가 잇는 것은?
- You can pay ___ at the counter or on the website. 전치사 덩어리와 전치사 덩어리문장과 문장at the counter와 on the website는 전치사 덩어리입니다.
- She bought apples and pears and left.
We can meet when you arrive or when the meeting ends.We can meet when you arrive or the meeting ends soon.when 덩어리와 when 덩어리를 이었습니다.
- The cat sat on the mat and ___. 뒤에 올 수 있는 것은? watched the birdswatching the birdsand 앞이 시간을 가진 동사 sat이므로 뒤도 같은 모양 watched입니다.
The shop sells The shop sells bread, cakes, and cookies.
2. and · or로 묶이는 것은 같은 모양 — to []와 to [] · ~ing와 ~ing
I like reading and swimming.은 ~ing끼리이고, I like to read and (to) swim.은 to []끼리입니다. I like reading and to swim. We need volunteers who can drive and who can stay late.

I like reading novels and watching old movies.
~ing와 ~ing.
I like reading novels and to watch old movies.
~ing와 to []가 섞였습니다. and watching 또는 to read … and to watch로 맞춥니다.
세부 능력 · and · or로 묶이는 것은 같은 모양: to []와 to [] · ~ing와 ~ing

- He wants to travel and ___. (to) writewritingto []와 to []를 묶습니다.
The room was small but bright. The room was small but had brightness.

- He opened the box and ___. smiledsmiling
I enjoy cooking and to serve food to my friends. → I enjoy cooking and serving food to my friends. and 양쪽을 ~ing로 맞춥니다.
3. 함께 다니는 접속사의 자리 — both A and B · not only A but also B · either A or B
둘씩 함께 다니는 접속사가 있습니다(개론 7장 4절). both A and B, either A or B, neither A nor B, not only A but (also) B, whether A or B입니다. He not only sings but also dances.에서 not only는 동사 sings 앞에, but also는 동사 dances 앞에 있습니다. He not only sings but also he dances. She sees the trip both as a vacation and as a lesson.
|---|---|---|
| both A and B | She speaks both Korean and Japanese. | She both speaks Korean and Japanese. ✗(both가 동사 앞) |
| either A or B | We can either take the bus or walk. | We either can take the bus or walk. ✗ |

| whether A or B | I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. | I don't know whether to laugh or crying. ✗ |
She both speaks Korean and writes Japanese. Not only does he sing, but he also dances.
You may either pay now or pay when you pick up the order.either와 or 뒤에 모두 동사 pay가 옵니다.
The plan is neither cheap nor simple.
Whether we win or lose, we will have tried.whether와 or 뒤에 동사 win · lose가 옵니다.
The course teaches students both to read maps and to use a compass.
both와 and 뒤에 to []가 나란히 옵니다.
The course both teaches students to read maps and to use a compass.
both가 동사 teaches 앞에 있는데 and 뒤에는 to []가 왔습니다.
세부 능력 · 함께 다니는 접속사의 자리: both A and B · not only A but also B · either A or B

- The hotel was neither clean ___ quiet. nororneither 뒤에는 nor를 씁니다.
He not only sings but also dances. He not only sings but also he dances.not only 뒤가 동사이면 but also 뒤도 동사입니다.
- We can either take the bus or . (walk, 걸어가다)We can either take the bus or walk. either 뒤가 원래 모양 take이므로 or 뒤도 원래 모양 walk입니다.

She not only plays the piano but also she sings. → She not only plays the piano but also sings. not only 뒤가 동사이면 but also 뒤도 동사입니다.
4. 비교와 나열의 균형 — those of · than · 되풀이되는 말 빼기 · 나열의 쉼표
The legs of a heron are longer than those of a duck. 되풀이되는 명사는 that of · those of로 받습니다(형용사 10장 2절). 하나이면 that of, 여럿이면 those of입니다. The climate here is milder than that of Seoul.
We need volunteers who can drive and (who can) stay late. She can sing, and he (can) dance.

The streets of the old town are narrower than the new district.

The water in this lake is clearer than that river. → The water in this lake is clearer than that in that river. 물과 물을 견줍니다. that = the water.
Standing only four feet tall, Leo could not reach the top shelf. To catch the early train, we left home at six. To catch the early train, the house was left at six.
|---|---|---|
| ~ing 덩어리 | Walking to school, he was chased by a dog. | Walking to school, a dog chased him.
| pp 덩어리 | Built in 1920, the bridge still carries traffic. | Built in 1920, traffic still crosses the bridge. ✗ |
| to [] 덩어리 | To catch the early train, we left home at six. | To catch the early train, the house was left at six. ✗ |
| 접속사 + ~ing | While jogging in the park, I lost my key. | While jogging in the park, my key was lost. ✗ |
When a child, I was taught to swim by my uncle. | When a child, my uncle taught me to swim. ✗ |
He eats only fish.는 생선만 먹는다는 뜻이고, Only he eats fish. She drove her kids to school almost every day.(거의 매일)와 She almost drove her kids to school every day.(거의 태울 뻔했다)는 뜻이 다릅니다.

Having finished the test early, Mina checked her answers twice.
The weather being fine, we ate outside.
Walking to the station, I saw a rainbow.
Walking to the station, a rainbow appeared.
As I walked to the station, a rainbow appeared.
- Standing only four feet tall, ___. Leo could not reach the top shelf.the top shelf was out of Leo's reach.

- While jogging in the park, ___. I lost my key.my key was lost.
- (생선만 먹는다) He eats .He eats only fish. only는 설명하는 말 fish 바로 앞에 둡니다.
She drove her kids to school almost every day.She almost drove her kids to school every day.almost는 설명하는 말 every day 바로 앞에 둡니다.
When a child, I was taught to swim by my uncle. When a child, my uncle taught me to swim.
Walking to school, a dog chased him. → Walking to school, he was chased by a dog. 걸어간 사람을 뒤 문장의 주어로 두거나, While he was walking …

Walking home, I saw … |
| only · almost · even | 설명하는 말 바로 앞 | He eats only fish. |
