양 · 시간 · 거리, every · each, 문장 주어, 동명사 주어는 하나로 보는 주어입니다. there 뒤의 동사와 분수 · 퍼센트 · of 뒤의 수량은 뒤의 명사에 맞추고, the number of는 하나, a number of는 여럿입니다. 대명사도 받는 말과 수가 맞아야 하고, its와 it's, their와 there를 구별합니다.
The cost of the repairs was higher than expected.머리는 cost(하나)입니다. of the repairs는 건너뜁니다.
Neither the coach nor the players were ready.nor로 묶였으므로 가까운 쪽 players에 맞춰 were입니다.
Two thirds of the land is forest, and a number of farms are for sale.분수는 of 뒤의 land(셀 수 없음)에 맞춰 is, a number of는 여럿이므로 are입니다.
전치사 덩어리(of the repairs), 관계사절(who failed the test), 분사 덩어리(standing at the gate), 동격(, my cousins,), 끼어든 말(, however,)이 그것입니다.
|---|---|---|---|
| The cost {of the repairs} was high.
| The students {who failed the test} were given another chance. | students (여럿) | 관계사절 | were |
| A boy {carrying two bags} was waiting.
| The twins, {my cousins,} are visiting. | twins (여럿) | 동격 | are |
| The key {to the back doors} is missing.
The quality of the apples from the new orchard is excellent.
The letters that my grandmother kept in a tin box were from her brother.
Mina, together with her brothers, is planting trees.together with 덩어리는 끼어든 말입니다. 머리는 Mina(하나)입니다.
She is one of the students who are always late.에서 who는 students를 대신하므로 are입니다. She is the only one of the students who is always late.
The list of names is on the desk.
The list of names are on the desk.
짝은 list is입니다.
- The price of the tickets ___ gone up. hashave머리는 price(하나)입니다. of the tickets는 건너뜁니다.

The plans for the new bridge is finished. → The plans for the new bridge are finished. 머리는 plans(여럿)이고 for the new bridge는 설명입니다.
2. and · as well as · either … or · neither … nor —
She and I are happy. Bread and butter is my breakfast. or · nor · either … or · neither … nor로 묶이면 동사에서 가까운 쪽에 맞춥니다. Either you or he is wrong. Neither the coach nor the players were ready. not only A but also B도 B에 맞춥니다. as well as · along with · together with · in addition to는 끼어든 말이므로 앞의 명사에 맞춥니다. The captain as well as the players was praised.
|---|---|---|
| A and B | 여럿 | Tom and Jerry are friends. |
| A and B (한 덩어리) | 하나 | Bread and butter is enough. / A needle and thread is on the table. |

Either of the routes is fine. Neither of them is wrong. Neither the teacher nor the students were ready.가 Neither the students nor the teacher was ready.
Neither the players nor the coach was surprised.
Neither the players nor the coach were surprised.
세부 능력 · and · as well as · not only … but also · either … or · neither … nor: 가까운 쪽

Ten kilometers is a long distance to run. Ten dollars is enough. Two hours was not enough. every · each · every one · either · neither는 하나씩 보는 말이므로 뒤에 여럿이 와도 동사는 하나입니다(개론 2장). Every student has a locker. Each of the boys has a ball. What he said was true. Making friends is easy.
Fifty dollars is too much. / Three weeks was not enough. |
| every · each + 명사 | 하나씩 보는 말 | Every seat was taken. / Each of the rooms has a window. |
| either · neither (혼자) | 둘 가운데 하나 | Neither of the keys fits. |
| 문장 주어 (what · that · whether) | 문장 하나 = 덩어리 하나 | What she wrote was true. / Whether we go depends on the weather. |
| 동명사 주어 · to [] 주어 | 하는 일 하나 | Reading maps is a useful skill. |
Great Expectations" is a long novel. |
모양이 -s로 끝나도 하나인 명사가 있고, -s가 없어도 여럿인 명사가 있습니다(개론 2장 7절). news · mathematics · physics · economics는 하나이고, police · people은 여럿입니다. data는 격식 있는 글에서 여럿(show)으로, 보통 글에서 한 덩어리(shows)로 쓰며 한 글 안에서 한 가지로 씁니다. What we need are more volunteers.(개론 1장 7절)
Each of the players has a number.
each는 하나씩 보는 말입니다. of the players가 여럿이어도 동사는 has입니다.
Each of the players have a number.
머리는 Each(하나)입니다.

4. There is/are · 분수 · 퍼센트 · the number of · a number of · 집합 명사
There is a problem. / There are two problems. 분수 · 퍼센트와 all of · most of · some of · half of · none of도 같은 길입니다. Two thirds of the land is forest. / Two thirds of the students are here. none of None of the stores was open. None of the stores were open.
|---|---|---|

| a number of | '많은'이라는 꾸밈말 → 뒤의 명사(여럿) | A number of cars are parked outside. |
| 집합 명사 (team · family · committee · class) | 한 덩어리로 보면 하나 (미국 글의 보통 모양) | The team is winning. / The committee has decided. |
the number of와 a number of는 모양이 비슷하지만 머리가 다릅니다. the number of는 '수'가 머리이므로 하나이고, a number of는 many와 같은 꾸밈말이므로 뒤의 명사가 머리입니다(개론 2장 7절). My family is large. The members of my family are all tall.
There were no seats left on the last train.
Most of the snow has melted, but most of the roads are still closed.snow(셀 수 없음)에는 has, roads(여럿)에는 are입니다.

number를 머리로 보았습니다. the number of만 '수'가 머리입니다.
연습 4 · 뒤의 명사에 맞추기 there · 분수 · the number of · 집합 명사의 동사를 고르거나 쓰세요. 세부 능력 · There is/are · 분수 · 퍼센트 · the number of · a number of · 집합 명사

5. 받는 말의 일치 — his or her · its와 it's · their · there
받는 말이 하나이면 he · she · it, 여럿이면 they입니다. everyone · each · somebody · nobody는 한 사람씩 보는 말이므로 동사를 하나로 맞춥니다. 받는 대명사로는 his or her와 their를 모두 씁니다(개론 3장 10절). Everyone should bring his or her ID. Everyone should bring their ID. Students should bring their IDs.
|---|---|---|
| 하나 | he · she · it · his · her · its | The dog wagged its tail. |
| 여럿 | they · their · them | The dogs wagged their tails. |
| everyone · each · somebody (하나씩) | his or her · their | Each student has his or her locker. / Each student has their locker. |
| 집합 명사 (한 덩어리) | it · its | The committee announced its decision. |
소리가 같아서 자주 섞이는 말이 있습니다. its는 '그것의'이고 it's는 it is · it has의 줄임입니다. their는 '그들의', they're는 they are의 줄임, there는 자리 채우는 말이나 '거기'입니다. whose는 '누구의', who's는 who is의 줄임입니다. The dog wagged its tail.에 it is를 넣으면 말이 되지 않으므로 its입니다. It's raining.은 It is raining이 되므로 it's입니다.
The team lost its first game, but its players kept their spirits up.team은 한 덩어리로 its, players는 여럿으로 their입니다.

The dog is chasing it's tail.
it is tail은 말이 되지 않습니다.
그래서 동사는 하나로 맞춥니다(Everyone is here.). 받는 대명사는 원래 his or her였습니다. 따라서 his or her와 their는 모두 맞고, 한 글 안에서는 한 가지로 씁니다.
세부 능력 · 받는 말의 일치: everyone … his or her · its와 it's · their · there

설명 덩어리는 건너뛰고, 묶는 말을 보고(and는 여럿 · or는 가까운 쪽 · as well as는 앞), 뜻으로 하나인 주어(양 · every · 문장 · 동명사)를 알아보고, 자리만 채우는 there와 양을 재는 말(분수 · 퍼센트 · a number of)은 뒤의 명사에 맞춥니다.
