For most of the year, the leaves of deciduous trees look green because they are packed with chlorophyll, a pigment that captures the energy of sunlight, which the leaf then uses to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugars. Chlorophyll is far from permanent: it breaks down continually, so throughout the summer the leaf must keep producing new chlorophyll to replace what it loses. Yellow and orange pigments called carotenoids are also present beneath this green; they help chlorophyll gather light, and they remain in the leaf for the entire growing season. The green is so abundant, though, that it masks these warmer hues until autumn.
The change begins when the lengthening nights of autumn signal the tree to prepare for winter. At the base of each leaf stalk, a layer of cells starts to seal off the veins that carry water into the leaf and sugars out of it. Deprived of a steady supply of water, the leaf stops replacing its chlorophyll, and as the existing chlorophyll breaks down, the green fades. The carotenoids, which break down more slowly, are left behind, and the leaf turns yellow or orange.
Red and purple follow a different path. They come from pigments called anthocyanins, most of which the leaf manufactures only in late summer and autumn. The raw material for these pigments is sugar: as the sealing layer narrows the veins, sugars produced on sunny days remain trapped in the leaf, and the tree uses some of them to make anthocyanins. Not every species makes these pigments, which is why some trees turn only yellow while others, such as the red maple, blaze crimson.
For a biology assignment, I compared two trees at our school over two autumns: the red maple beside the main gate and a tree by the gym whose leaves turn yellow every fall. On October 18 each year, I picked forty leaves from the lower branches of each tree and sorted them by main color. Last year, thirty-one of the maple's forty leaves were mostly red; this year, only thirteen were, and most of the others were a dull orange. The yellow tree, by contrast, produced nearly identical results both times.
My first suspect was the weather: in the week before last year's count, the sky was cloudless and the nights fell to roughly 4°C; this year that week was cloudy, and the nights stayed near 13°C. This difference fits what university extension scientists describe: sunny days let a leaf make plenty of sugar, and cool nights above freezing help keep it there, while cloudy days and warm nights leave less for anthocyanins. They also note that yellows vary less from year to year because carotenoids are already in the leaf before autumn. A summer drought or an early frost can weaken the display, but neither summer was unusually dry, and both counts preceded the first frost.
Even so, I hesitate to call the weather the cause. Last spring, workers dug up the ground around the maple's roots to lay a new sidewalk, and extension guides list root damage among the stresses that can change a tree's autumn colors. Because the weather and the state of the roots changed in the same year, two autumns at one tree cannot show which change made the difference. To separate the two, I plan to keep counting for several more years and to compare the maple with red maples far from any construction.
'For most of the year' 는 때(한 해의 대부분 동안). 주어 the leaves of deciduous trees(낙엽수의 잎), 동사 look, 보어 green(초록으로 보인다). 'because they are packed with chlorophyll' 은 까닭(엽록소로 가득 차 있기 때문에) — they = the leaves. 쉼표 뒤 'a pigment that captures the energy of sunlight' 는 chlorophyll 이 무엇인지 다시 풀어 주는 말이고, 'that captures …' 쉼표 뒤 'which the leaf then uses to turn A into B' 는 the energy of sunlight 를 덧붙여 설명하는 관계사절(잎이 그 다음에 그것을 써서 A 를 B 로 바꾸는) — use 의 목적어 자리가 비어 있다.
주어 Chlorophyll, 동사 is, 'far from permanent' 는 '영구적인 것과는 거리가 먼'(전혀 오래가지 않는). 쌍점(:) 뒤가 그 까닭을 풀어 준다: 주어 it(= chlorophyll), 동사 breaks down(분해된다), continually(끊임없이). so(그래서) 뒤: 'throughout the summer' 는 동안(여름 내내), 주어 the leaf, 동사 must keep producing(계속 만들어야 한다 — keep ~ing), 목적어 new chlorophyll. 'to replace what it loses' 는 목적(잃는 것을 채우려고) — what = the thing that, it = the leaf.
동사 are also present(~도 있다), 'beneath this green' 은 어디에(이 초록 밑에). 세미콜론 뒤 두 문장: they help chlorophyll gather light(엽록소가 빛을 모으도록 돕는다 — help + 사람/사물 + 원형) · they remain in the leaf(잎에 남아 있다), 'for the entire growing season' 은 동안(자라는 철 내내). they = carotenoids.

주어 They(= red and purple), 동사 come from(~에서 나온다), 'pigments called anthocyanins' 는 안토시아닌이라고 불리는 색소 — called 는 pigments 를 뒤에서 꾸미는 pp. 쉼표 뒤 'most of which the leaf manufactures …' 는 수량 + of which(그 색소의 대부분을 잎이 만들어 낸다) — which = anthocyanins, manufactures 의 목적어가 most of which 이다. 'only in late summer and autumn' 은 때(늦여름과 가을에만).
The raw material for these pigments(이 색소의 원료), 동사 is, 보어 sugar. 쌍점 뒤가 원료가 어떻게 쓰이는지 풀어 준다: 'as the sealing layer narrows the veins' 는 때(막는 세포층이 잎맥을 좁혀 가면서). 주어 sugars produced on sunny days(맑은 날에 만들어진 당분 — produced 는 sugars 를 뒤에서 꾸미는 pp 덩어리), 동사 remain trapped(갇힌 채로 남는다 — remain + pp). and 뒤: 주어 the tree, 동사 uses, 목적어 some of them(그 가운데 일부 — them = sugars), 'to make anthocyanins' 는 목적(안토시아닌을 만들려고).
주어 Not every species(모든 종이 ~하는 것은 아님 — not every 는 '일부는 만들고 일부는 만들지 않는다'는 부분 부정), 동사 makes, 목적어 these pigments. 쉼표 뒤 'which is why …' 는 앞 문장 전체를 받는 which(그것이 ~한 까닭이다): 주어 some trees, 동사 turn only yellow(노랗게만 물든다), 'while others … blaze crimson'(반면 다른 나무는 진홍빛으로 타오른다), 'such as the red maple' 은 others 의 보기(붉은단풍나무 같은).
'For a biology assignment' 는 무엇을 위해(생물 과제로). 주어 I, 동사 compared(견주었다), 목적어 two trees at our school(우리 학교의 나무 두 그루), 'over two autumns' 는 동안(두 해 가을에 걸쳐). 쌍점 뒤가 두 나무를 밝힌다: the red maple beside the main gate(정문 옆의 붉은단풍나무) 와 a tree by the gym(체육관 옆의 나무) — 'whose leaves turn yellow every fall' 은 tree 를 설명하는 관계사절(그 나무의 잎이 가을마다 노랗게 물드는), whose = 그 나무의.
'On October 18 each year' 는 때(해마다 10월 18일에). 주어 I 에 동사 둘이 and 로 이어진다: picked forty leaves(잎 마흔 장을 땄다), 'from the lower branches of each tree'(나무마다 아래쪽 가지에서) · sorted them(그것들을 나누었다), 'by main color'(주된 빛깔에 따라). them = forty leaves.
앞: 'Last year' 는 때(지난해), 주어 thirty-one of the maple's forty leaves(단풍나무 잎 마흔 장 가운데 서른한 장), 동사 were, 보어 mostly red(대체로 붉은). 뒤: 'this year' 는 때(올해), 주어 only thirteen(열세 장만), 동사 were — 뒤에 mostly red 가 되풀이되지 않고 빠졌다. and 뒤: 주어 most of the others(나머지 가운데 대부분), 동사 were, 보어 a dull orange(칙칙한 주황색).
주어 The yellow tree(노랗게 물드는 그 나무), 끼워 넣은 'by contrast'(이와 달리, 대조적으로), 동사 produced(내었다), 목적어 nearly identical results(거의 똑같은 결과), 'both times' 는 때(두 번 모두).
주어 My first suspect(내가 처음 의심한 것), 동사 was, 보어 the weather. 세미콜론 앞: 'in the week before last year's count' 는 때(지난해 센 날 앞의 한 주 동안), the sky was cloudless(하늘에 구름 한 점 없었다) 와 the nights fell to roughly 4°C(밤 기온이 섭씨 4도 안팎까지 떨어졌다). 세미콜론 뒤: this year that week was cloudy(올해 그 주는 흐렸다) 와 the nights stayed near 13°C(밤이 섭씨 13도 가까이에 머물렀다). stay + 형용사 = ~한 채로 있다(stayed near 13°C = 13도 가까이에 머물렀다).
주어 This difference(이 차이), 동사 fits(맞는다), 목적어 'what university extension scientists describe'(대학의 농촌 지도 과학자들이 설명하는 것) — what = the thing that, describe 의 목적어 자리가 비어 있다. 쌍점 뒤가 그 설명이다: sunny days let a leaf make plenty of sugar(맑은 날은 잎이 당분을 넉넉히 만들게 한다 — let + 대상 + 원형) · cool nights above freezing help keep it there(영하보다 높은 서늘한 밤은 그것을 거기에 붙잡아 두도록 돕는다 — help + 원형, it = sugar, there = 잎 안). 'while …' 은 맞섬(반면): 주어 cloudy days and warm nights(흐린 날과 따뜻한 밤), 동사 leave(남긴다), 목적어 less(더 적은 양), 'for anthocyanins'(안토시아닌에 쓸).
주어 They(= university extension scientists), 동사 also note(또 말한다), 목적어는 that 문장: 주어 yellows(노란빛들), 동사 vary less(덜 달라진다), 'from year to year'(해마다). 'because carotenoids are already in the leaf before autumn' 은 까닭(카로티노이드가 가을 전에 이미 잎에 있기 때문에).
A summer drought or an early frost(여름 가뭄이나 이른 서리), 동사 can weaken(약하게 할 수 있다 — 그럴 수 있다는 가능의 can), 목적어 the display(단풍의 모습). but 뒤 두 문장: neither summer was unusually dry(어느 여름도 유난히 메마르지 않았다 — neither + 단수 명사 = 둘 가운데 어느 쪽도 아님) · both counts preceded the first frost(두 번의 세기 모두 첫서리보다 앞섰다).
주어 I, 동사 hesitate to call(부르기를 망설인다 — hesitate + to []), 'the weather the cause' 는 call + 목적어 + 이름(날씨를 원인이라고).
앞 문장: 'Last spring' 은 때(지난봄), 주어 workers(일꾼들), 동사 dug up(파헤쳤다), 목적어 the ground around the maple's roots(단풍나무 뿌리 둘레의 땅), 'to lay a new sidewalk' 는 목적(새 보도를 깔려고). and 뒤: 주어 extension guides(농촌 지도 안내서), 동사 list(꼽는다), 목적어 root damage(뿌리 손상), 'among the stresses that can change a tree's autumn colors' 는 어디에 넣어 꼽는지(나무의 가을 빛깔을 바꿀 수 있는 스트레스 가운데) — 'that can change …'
'Because …' 는 까닭: 주어 the weather and the state of the roots(날씨와 뿌리의 상태), 동사 changed, 'in the same year'(같은 해에). 주어 two autumns at one tree(한 나무에서 본 두 해 가을), 동사 cannot show(보여 줄 수 없다), 목적어 'which change made the difference'(어느 변화가 그 차이를 만들었는지) — 문장 안에 든 질문으로, which change 가 그 안의 주어다.
'To separate the two' 는 목적(둘을 가려내려고) — the two = 날씨와 뿌리의 상태. 주어 I, 동사 plan(계획한다), 목적어 to [] 둘이 and 로 나란히 이어진다: to keep counting for several more years(몇 해 더 계속 세기 — keep ~ing) · to compare the maple with red maples far from any construction(이 단풍나무를 공사와 멀리 떨어진 붉은단풍나무들과 견주기).
