For centuries, Koreans have used the bojagi, a plain square of fabric, to wrap, carry, and cover the objects of everyday life. Because the cloth takes the shape of whatever it holds, it can wrap a bottle one day and a stack of books the next. When it is not needed, it can simply be folded flat. Some people also believed that a bojagi kept good fortune inside, since in Chinese its name sounds the same as the word for good fortune. Of all the kinds of bojagi, the jogakbo, a cloth pieced together from small scraps, has drawn particular attention in recent decades for its refined, modern-looking designs.
The scraps came from fabric left over after clothes had been made or from usable parts of garments too worn to wear. Girls learned to sew from their mothers and grandmothers, often by gathering such leftover pieces and joining them into a jogakbo. In one traditional method, two edges are laid against each other and stitched together so that the tiny stitches remain visible. Some cloths that survive from the Joseon period combine silk and ramie in grid-like patterns, and the thin ramie ones look almost transparent against the light.
Unlike the pieces of a puzzle, the scraps of a jogakbo have no fixed places, so the maker decides where each one goes as the cloth grows. Once joined, however, they form one continuous surface whose contrasting colors and natural proportions give the cloth its distinctive beauty. Made from what others might have thrown away, the jogakbo unites thrift and care with a striking sense of color.
A traditional Korean knot begins long before it is tied, with the making of the cord itself. Fine threads are twisted and dyed, and several strands are then braided into a cord that may be round, as for the strings of ornaments and pouches, or flat, as for belts.
However complex the final design may be, every knot starts from the same step: a single cord is folded in half to mark its center. The two strands are then woven around each other in a fixed order, and the knot is tightened little by little with a blunt awl to keep it balanced. A finished knot looks the same from the front as from the back, and its left and right halves mirror each other. Because each loop must suit the thickness of the cord, the maker chooses the cord's color and thickness before the first knot is tied.
Many knots are named after familiar plants and animals, including the butterfly, the dragonfly, and the chrysanthemum. Usually tied in a cord of one color with a tassel hanging below, they aim at proportion and rhythm, expressing quiet elegance rather than showy splendor. They decorated musical instruments, palanquins, and Buddhist ritual objects, as well as the small ornaments that women wore. Wall paintings in Goguryeo tombs show that such knots have a long history in Korea, and in the Joseon period the state employed its own knot makers. When demand fell sharply in modern times, the skill nearly died out, so in 1968 the Korean government designated it a national intangible heritage. In this way, a single cord, shaped by patient hands, becomes an object that is both useful and beautiful.

주어 Koreans, 동사 have used(써 왔다) — 오래전부터 지금까지 이어지는 일이라 have pp 이다. 목적어 the bojagi, 쉼표 사이 'a plain square of fabric' 은 보자기가 무엇인지 다시 풀어 주는 말(동격, 수수한 네모 천 한 장)이다. 'to wrap, carry, and cover the objects of everyday life' 는 무엇을 하려고(일상의 물건을 싸고, 나르고, 덮으려고) — to 뒤의 원형 셋이 and 로 이어졌다.
'Because …' 그 안에서 주어 the cloth, 동사 takes the shape of …(~의 모양을 따른다), 'whatever it holds' 는 '그것이 담는 것은 무엇이든'이라는 명사 덩어리로 of 의 목적어 자리에 있다 — whatever 가 holds 의 목적어 자리를 맡는다. 뒤 문장: 주어 it(= the cloth), 동사 can wrap, 목적어 둘이 and 로 이어진다: a bottle one day(어느 날은 병) · a stack of books the next(다음 날은 책 한 무더기) — the next 뒤에 day 가 빠졌다.
'When it is not needed' 는 때(필요하지 않을 때). 주어 it(= the cloth), 동사 can simply be folded(그냥 접힐 수 있다) — 천은 접히는 받는 쪽이라 조동사 + be + pp 이다. flat 은 접힌 뒤의 모양(납작하게).
주어 Some people, 동사 also believed(~라고 믿기도 했다), 목적어는 that 문장: 주어 a bojagi, 동사 kept good fortune inside(복을 안에 간직했다). 그 안에서 주어 its name(보자기의 이름), 동사 sounds the same as …(~과 소리가 같다), 'the word for good fortune' 은 복을 뜻하는 말.
'Of all the kinds of bojagi' 는 범위(여러 보자기 가운데). 주어 the jogakbo, 쉼표 사이 'a cloth pieced together from small scraps' 는 조각보가 무엇인지 풀어 주는 동격의 말이고, 그 안의 'pieced together from small scraps' 는 cloth 를 뒤에서 꾸미는 pp 덩어리(작은 조각들로 이어 붙여진)이다. 동사 has drawn particular attention(특히 관심을 받아 왔다), 'in recent decades' 는 때(최근 수십 년 동안), 'for its refined, modern-looking designs' 는 까닭(세련되고 현대적으로 보이는 짜임 때문에).
주어 The scraps, 동사 came from …(~에서 나왔다). from 뒤가 or 로 둘: ① 'fabric left over after clothes had been made'(옷을 짓고 남은 천) — left over 는 fabric 을 꾸미는 pp 이고, 옷을 지은 일은 천이 남은 때보다 앞서서 had been pp 이다. ② 'usable parts of garments too worn to wear'(너무 해어져 입을 수 없는 옷의 쓸 만한 부분) — too … to [] 는 '너무 ~해서 …
주어 Girls, 동사 learned to sew(바느질하는 법을 배웠다), 'from their mothers and grandmothers' 는 누구에게서. 쉼표 뒤 'often by gathering … and joining …' 은 어떻게(흔히 ~을 모으고 ~을 이어 붙이면서) — 전치사 by 뒤에 ~ing 둘이 and 로 이어졌다. join A into B = A 를 이어 B 를 만들다.
주어 two edges(두 가장자리), 동사 둘이 and 로: are laid against each other(서로 맞대어 놓인다) · stitched together(함께 꿰매진다) — 가장자리는 놓이고 꿰매지는 받는 쪽이라 be + pp 이다. 'so that the tiny stitches remain visible' 은 그렇게 하는 목적 · 결과(작은 바늘땀이 보인 채로 남도록).
Some cloths, 'that survive from the Joseon period' 는 cloths 를 설명하는 관계사절(조선 시대부터 남아 있는), 동사 combine(함께 쓴다), 목적어 silk and ramie(명주와 모시), 'in grid-like patterns' 는 어떤 모양으로(바둑판 같은 무늬로). and 뒤 문장: 주어 the thin ramie ones(얇은 모시로 된 것들 — ones 는 cloths 를 되풀이하지 않으려고 쓴 말), 동사 look almost transparent(거의 투명해 보인다), 'against the light' 는 빛에 비추어.
'Unlike the pieces of a puzzle' 는 견줌(퍼즐 조각과 달리 — unlike 는 전치사). 주어 the scraps of a jogakbo, 동사 have no fixed places(정해진 자리가 없다). 쉼표 뒤 so(그래서): 주어 the maker, 동사 decides, 목적어 'where each one goes'(조각 하나하나가 어디로 가는지) — 문장 안에 든 질문이라 의문사 + 주어 + 동사 차례이다. 'as the cloth grows' 는 때(천이 커져 가면서).
'Once joined' 는 Once they are joined(일단 이어지면)에서 they are 를 뺀 꼴 — 조각들은 이어지는 받는 쪽이라 pp 이다. however(그러나)는 앞 문장과 맞서는 내용을 잇는다. 주어 they(= the scraps), 동사 form(이룬다), 목적어 one continuous surface(하나로 이어진 면). 'whose contrasting colors and natural proportions give …' 그 안: 주어 contrasting colors and natural proportions(맞서는 빛깔과 자연스러운 비례), 동사 give, give A B = A 에게 B 를 주다(천에 특유의 아름다움을).
'Made from what others might have thrown away' 는 pp 로 시작하는 덩어리로, 뒤의 주어 the jogakbo 가 어떤 것인지 밝힌다(~으로 만들어진). 그 안의 'what others might have thrown away' 는 '남들이 버렸을지도 모르는 것' — what = the thing that, might have pp 는 지난 일에 대한 짐작이다. 주어 the jogakbo, 동사 unites A with B(A 를 B 와 하나로 묶는다): A = thrift and care(알뜰함과 정성), B = a striking sense of color(빛깔에 대한 뛰어난 감각).
주어 A traditional Korean knot(한국의 전통 매듭), 동사 begins(시작된다), 'long before it is tied' 는 때(그것이 묶이기 훨씬 전에) — 매듭은 묶이는 받는 쪽이라 is tied 이다. 쉼표 뒤 'with the making of the cord itself' 는 무엇으로 시작하는지(끈 자체를 만드는 일로).
and 로 이은 두 문장. 첫째: 주어 Fine threads(가는 실), 동사 are twisted and dyed(꼬이고 물들여진다) — 실은 받는 쪽이라 be + pp 이다. 둘째: 주어 several strands(여러 가닥), 동사 are then braided into a cord(그다음 땋아져 끈이 된다). 'that may be round … or flat …' 은 cord 를 설명하는 관계사절(둥글 수도, 납작할 수도 있는): 'as for the strings of ornaments and pouches'(장신구와 주머니의 끈처럼) · 'as for belts'(허리띠처럼)는 저마다 그 모양을 쓰는 예이다.
'However complex the final design may be' 는 양보(마지막 모양이 아무리 복잡하더라도) — however + 형용사 + 주어 + 동사 = no matter how …. 주어 every knot, 동사 starts from the same step(같은 단계에서 출발한다). 쌍점(:) 뒤가 그 단계: 주어 a single cord(끈 한 가닥), 동사 is folded in half(반으로 접힌다 — 받는 쪽), 'to mark its center' 는 목적(가운데를 표시하려고).
and 로 이은 두 문장. 첫째: 주어 The two strands(두 가닥), 동사 are then woven around each other(그다음 서로 엮인다 — weave 의 pp woven), 'in a fixed order' 는 어떻게(정해진 차례대로). 둘째: 주어 the knot, 동사 is tightened(죄어진다), 'little by little'(조금씩), 'with a blunt awl'(끝이 뭉툭한 송곳으로), 'to keep it balanced' 는 목적(그것이 균형을 이루게 하려고) — keep + 목적어 + 상태.
앞 문장: 주어 A finished knot(다 맺은 매듭 — finished 는 knot 앞의 한 낱말 pp), 동사 looks the same(같아 보인다), 'from the front as from the back' 은 the same … as 꼴로 견주는 두 쪽(앞에서와 뒤에서). and 뒤 문장: 주어 its left and right halves(왼쪽 반과 오른쪽 반), 동사 mirror each other(서로 거울에 비춘 듯 같다).
'Because …' 는 까닭: 주어 each loop(고리 하나하나), 동사 must suit(~에 맞아야 한다), 목적어 the thickness of the cord(끈의 굵기). 뒤 문장: 주어 the maker, 동사 chooses, 목적어 the cord's color and thickness(끈의 빛깔과 굵기), 'before the first knot is tied' 는 때(첫 매듭을 맺기 전에 — 매듭은 맺히는 받는 쪽).
주어 Many knots, 동사 are named after …(~을 따서 이름이 지어졌다 — 굳은 수동 표현), 'familiar plants and animals'(친숙한 식물과 동물), 'including …'
'Usually tied in a cord of one color' 는 pp 로 시작하는 덩어리로 뒤의 주어 they(= the knots)를 설명한다(흔히 한 빛깔의 끈으로 맺어지는) — 매듭은 맺히는 받는 쪽이라 pp. 'with a tassel hanging below' 는 with + 명사 + ~ing(술이 아래로 늘어진 채). 주어 they, 동사 aim at proportion and rhythm(비례와 율동을 추구한다).
주어 They(= the knots), 동사 decorated(꾸몄다), 목적어 셋: musical instruments(악기) · palanquins(가마) · Buddhist ritual objects(불교 의식에 쓰는 물건). 'as well as …' 는 '~도 함께', 'the small ornaments that women wore' 는 관계사절이 ornaments 를 설명한다(여성들이 지니던 작은 장신구) — that 은 wore 의 목적어 자리를 맡는다.
앞 문장: 주어 Wall paintings in Goguryeo tombs(고구려 무덤의 벽화), 동사 show, 목적어는 that 문장(이런 매듭이 한국에서 오랜 역사를 지녔다는 것). and 뒤 문장: 'in the Joseon period'(조선 시대에는), 주어 the state(나라), 동사 employed(고용했다, 두었다), 목적어 its own knot makers(나라에 딸린 매듭 장인).
'When demand fell sharply in modern times' 는 때(근대에 들어 수요가 크게 줄었을 때). 주어 the skill, 동사 nearly died out(거의 끊길 뻔했다). 쉼표 뒤 so(그래서): 'in 1968', 주어 the Korean government, 동사 designated, designate A B = A 를 B 로 지정하다(그것을 국가 무형유산으로).
'In this way'(이렇게). 주어 a single cord, 쉼표 사이 'shaped by patient hands' 는 그 끈을 덧붙여 설명하는 pp 덩어리(끈기 있는 손에 다듬어져). 동사 becomes, 보어 an object, 'that is both useful and beautiful' 은 object 를 설명하는 관계사절 — both A and B(쓸모 있으면서도 아름다운).
