The city wants to place rental electric scooters beside the busy avenue by our campus, and I support the plan as long as strict safety rules come with it. To begin with, the scooters could make daily travel much easier. Many students' homes are too distant for walking but too close to justify a bus ride, and a ten-minute scooter trip would let them sleep a little longer and still get to class before the bell. However, the same speed that makes scooters useful also makes them dangerous. Riders who weave between people on a crowded sidewalk can easily knock down a small child, and scooters dumped in the middle of the sidewalk can trip elderly walkers. For this reason, the city should limit the scooters' speed near the school, require riders to wear helmets, and mark special parking zones by the gate. If these rules are enforced, our neighborhood can enjoy faster travel without trading away the safety of the people who walk there.
