Dear neighbors, I am writing to ask you to drive slowly on Lake Road on rainy spring evenings. Each spring, toads leave the wooded hills and cross this road to reach the reservoir, where they breed. First, they travel mostly in the evening and in wet weather, when drivers can hardly see such small, dark animals. One morning last March, my friends and I saw more than forty crushed toads along one short stretch of the road. Second, the toads cannot simply choose a safer path, since year after year they return along their old route to the reservoir. Third, a small change in our habits can save many of them. If you slow down near the reservoir and watch the edges of the road, they will have time to cross. Our science club will also put up warning signs and carry toads across on the busiest nights. With your help, these toads can reach the water safely this spring and the next. Thank you for reading.
