Our school library should welcome students on Saturday mornings as well. First, consider the facts. The library is now closed from Friday at 5:00 until Monday at 8:00, and the nearest public library is a forty-minute bus ride away. In a student council survey last month, 212 of the 340 students who responded said that they had nowhere calm to study at home on weekends. In my view, these numbers show a real need that our school can meet at little cost. Second, twelve parents have volunteered to supervise the reading room from 9:00 until noon. I believe that this offer answers the strongest objection, which is the question of who would watch the room. Finally, most of our weekly quizzes take place on Monday mornings, and I am confident that students who review in a calm place on Saturday will begin those quizzes better prepared. For these reasons, the school should try Saturday hours for one semester and then review the results.
