The metal-type edition of Jikji and its woodblock edition contain the same Zen teachings, yet they differ in several ways. Both were produced by Buddhist temples in the late fourteenth century, only a year apart. The first was printed at Heungdeok Temple in 1377, with each character cast as a separate piece of metal. The second was printed at Chwiam Temple in 1378, with every page carved into a single block of wood. The two editions have also had different fates. In Paris lies the only surviving volume of the metal-type edition. In Korea, by contrast, rest both volumes of the woodblock edition. Seen side by side, the two books show that a single text could reach readers through two very different ways of printing.
