A: The heavy rain last night washed away almost all the lettuce that our group planted in the community garden. B: Oh no. I know how you feel. A storm ruined our tomato plants last summer. A: We worked on those plants for three weekends, and now we have to start over. B: That's disappointing. But the garden manager said that she would give us new seedlings. A: Really? Then maybe we can replant them this Saturday. B: Good idea. Please don't forget to label your gloves. Last time, two people went home with the wrong pair. A: I won't. Could you tell the others in our group, too? B: Sure. And don't forget to look at Saturday's forecast before we go.

Neighbor Report: Mr. Halden Mr. Halden, an imaginary neighbor, is eighty-one and lives alone in a fourth-floor apartment with no elevator. Since he hurt his knee last winter, he has found it exhausting to carry groceries up the stairs. The pharmacy on which he depends is a twenty-minute walk away, and the friends with whom he used to play chess have moved to other cities. As a result, he rarely leaves home and often feels lonely. Neighbors could make it easier for him to stay independent. A student could pick up his medicine after school, and a family downstairs could invite him to dinner once a week. In return, Mr. Halden, who taught math for forty years, could help children in the building with their homework.
