Giant's Causeway

Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland photo

The Giant's Causeway is a strange group of tall rocks that stand in the ocean along the north coast of Northern Ireland. A causeway is a kind of bridge. An old legend says that Finn MacCool, a character in many old Irish stories, built the Giant's Causeway.

MacCool built a bridge from Ireland to Scotland, the story goes, so that giants could cross the bridge from one country to the other. The causeway has about 40,000 tall stones made of a rock called basalt. Some rocks are up to 20 feet (6 meters) high. Scientists believe that lava from an ancient volcano created the causeway.
