2022학년도 수능 영어 35번, 해설 (문제 풀이)

글이 어떻게 쓰여 있는 것과는 상관없이 아는 단어만 모아서 내 마음대로 뜻을 만들어내는 사람에게는 앞의 빈칸 문제가 이 문제보다 어렵게 느껴집니다. 하지만, 흐름과 관계없는 문장을 찾는 문제는 빈칸 문제보다 더 어렵게 디자인되어 있습니다. 이유는 읽고 있는 문장이 앞 문장과 그리고 뒤의 문장과 부드럽게 연결되는지를 계속 체크하면서 끝까지 읽어야 하기 때문입니다.
빈칸 문제보다 더 어렵게 디자인되어 있지만, 조금만 연습하면 쉽게 풀 수 있습니다. 대부분 말도 어렵지 않습니다.
문맥상 낱말의 쓰임이 적절하지 않은 것을 찾는 문제(30번)에서 언급했습니다. 읽는 연습이 꽤 된 사람은 빠른 속도로 읽어가다가 갑자기 ‘쿵’하고 자동으로 읽는 것을 멈추게 됩니다. 그 문장이 흐름과 관계없는 문장입니다. 흐름과 관계없는 문장을 빼버리면, 글이 매끄럽게 흘러갑니다.
읽다 보면 저절로 알 수 있다고 하니 기분이 좀 나빠지나요? 우리가 초등학교 1학년 때의 책을 떠올려보면, 그림이 대부분이고 문장 하나. 2학년 때는 그림의 크기가 좀 줄고, 문장 2~3개. 6학년 때는 그림은 거의 없고 페이지 전체가 글로 꽉 차 있었습니다. 책이 왜 이렇게 디자인되어 있죠? 네, 맞습니다. 글을 읽으면서 머릿속에 그림을 그리도록 배웠습니다. 6학년쯤 되면 글만 보아도 쉽게 머릿속에 그림을 그려낼 수 있게 됩니다. 그리고 누구나 다 잘합니다. 영어도 이렇게 공부했어야 합니다. 그런데, 단어:한글 뜻 방식으로 외우는 연습만 한 학생이 많죠? 공부를 잘못한 겁니다. 다행히 고치기가 쉽습니다. 수능 마지막 페이지에 있는 장문 문제를 보면 초등학교 1~2학년 수준의 동화가 등장합니다. 이 정도 수준의 동화를 몇 개 읽으면서 고치면 됩니다. 순식간에 고칠 수 있습니다. 이미 모두가 한글로는 훈련이 되어 있기 때문에 영어에 적용하는 연습만 하면 됩니다.
