천재교과서 이상기
교과서 단원의 주제와 핵심 문법에 맞추어 새로 쓴 글입니다. 교과서 본문이 아닙니다.

In March, a new student joined our class. Her name was Amira, and she came from another country. She knew only a few Korean words. When Ms. Pyo introduced her, Amira smiled shyly but did not say a word.
For the first week, Amira was very quiet. When we asked her questions, she only nodded or shook her head. At lunch, she sat alone and ate very little. One day, Areum sat down next to her and asked, "What's wrong?" Amira just pointed at the dishes on her tray. She did not know their names in Korean.
The next day, our class made a plan with Ms. Pyo. After school, Woobin and I went to the library to find a picture dictionary for Amira. It had a small picture next to every word. Areum made name cards with funny drawings to teach Amira our names. Other classmates put Korean labels on the door, the windows, and the clock. Every morning, Amira came to school early to read the labels.
Amira helped us, too. She taught us "thank you" in her language, and we used it often. When Amira got a new Korean word right, the whole class cheered. By May, she was laughing and talking with us at lunch.
In June, Amira returned the picture dictionary to the library. She did not need it anymore. When many people help a little, a new friend does not stay lonely for long.

- cheer 환호하다, 응원하다 기뻐서 소리치며 반기는 것. cheer for ~ = ~을 응원하다.
- dictionary 사전 낱말의 뜻을 찾아보는 책. a picture dictionary = 낱말마다 그림을 붙인 그림 사전.
- label 이름표, 표 물건에 붙여 이름이나 내용을 적어 둔 작은 종이. 옷의 '상표'를 뜻하기도 한다.
- language 언어, 말 her language = 그 사람이 쓰는 나라 말.
- lonely 외로운 곁에 함께할 사람이 없어 쓸쓸한 마음. alone(혼자)은 함께 있는 사람이 없다는 사실을 말한다. stay lonely = 계속 외롭게 지내다.
- classmate 반 친구 같은 반에서 함께 공부하는 친구. class(반) + mate(친구).
- shyly 수줍게 shy(수줍은)에 -ly 를 붙인 말. smile shyly = 수줍게 웃다.
