Some festivals welcome a new season, and others honor the past. Here is a guide to four festivals, one for each season.

In spring, people in India celebrate Holi. People call Holi the festival of colors, and the name fits perfectly. On the day of the festival, crowds gather in the streets and throw colored powder at one another. Soon the powder makes it hard to recognize anyone, even your own brother.

In summer, visitors from many countries come to Boryeong, a city on Korea's west coast, for its mud festival. The mud comes from the nearby sea, and many people believe it is good for the skin. Visitors slide into pools of mud, and some paint their friends' faces with colored mud. At first, some visitors find it strange to cover themselves in mud. After a few minutes, however, they stop worrying about getting dirty.

In the fall, families in Mexico celebrate the Day of the Dead. The name may sound sad, but the holiday is full of music and joy. Families believe that the spirits of their loved ones come home for a short visit. To welcome them, they decorate altars with photos, candles, orange flowers, and favorite foods. These altars make it easy for families to remember and honor the people they have lost.

In winter, Quebec City in Canada holds its famous Winter Carnival. Its host is a tall snowman with a red hat, and everyone calls him Bonhomme. Workers build a new ice palace for him. Teams race boats on a river full of ice, and parades fill the streets at night. Thick coats and hot drinks make it possible to stay outside for hours. Visitors also ride down long ice slides.

These festivals look very different, but they share one thing. All of them give people a reason to step outside their everyday lives and celebrate together.
