When I was ten, my grandmother gave me a sketchbook as a birthday gift. It had a green cover and white pages. At first, I did not open it very often. I could not draw well, and my pictures looked strange to me.
One Saturday, Grandma visited us for lunch. She showed me some of her old drawings of birds and trees. Then she taught me a simple trick: draw the big shapes first and the small details later. When she sat down with a cup of tea, I tried the trick and drew her hands.
After that, I carried the sketchbook everywhere. When I waited for the bus, I drew the people at the stop. When it rained, I drew the raindrops on my window. Every Sunday night, I sent Grandma photos of my new drawings. My drawings slowly improved.
Last fall, our school planned an art exhibition in the library. Each student could enter one drawing. I felt nervous, but I looked through my sketchbook page by page. Then I chose the drawing of Grandma's hands. I drew it again on a big sheet of paper and put it in a frame.
On the first day of the exhibition, Grandma came to the library with my parents. When she saw my drawing on the wall, she smiled and hugged me. Then she gave me another gift, a new sketchbook with a blue cover. My first sketchbook is full now, and I am filling the blue one.
