Last June, our class decided to save electricity for a month. One hot afternoon in May, we came back from lunch to an empty classroom. Nobody was there, but the lights and the air conditioner were on. We wanted to stop this waste, so we made a plan.

Our plan had three simple rules. First, we switched off the lights when we left the room. Second, we unplugged the tablet chargers after school. Until then, we did not know that a charger uses a little electricity even when it is not charging. Third, we opened the windows on cool mornings instead of using the air conditioner. We used it only on very hot afternoons.

Every day, two students kept a record on a chart. In the first week, we forgot to turn off the lights nine times. In the last week, we forgot only once. In the first week, the air conditioner was on for about six hours a day. In the last week, it was on for only three hours a day.

At first, some students thought that one class could not make a big difference. Now everyone in our class knows that small actions matter. The fresh morning air also kept us awake in class. Last week, we heard that two other classes wanted to try our rules. We hope to share our chart with them soon. I think that this month was good for the earth and good for us.
