Last Friday was a special day for our school forest club. We planted ten young trees along the edge of the playground.

Why did we choose that place? After soccer games, students often sit on the benches by the playground. But there is no shade there, so the benches get very hot in summer. We planted the trees behind the benches to give the students shade. We also planted them to help the birds at our school. Birds often sit on the fence there, but there are no trees for them.

We started at nine o'clock. First, we dug ten holes with small shovels. The ground was hard, so we took turns. Then we put a tree in each hole and filled the holes with soil. Hyejin and I carried buckets of water from the gym for the trees. Ms. Ryu, our club teacher, tied each tree to a long stick to keep it straight in the wind. We finished at noon, and our gloves were full of dirt.

Before lunch, each of us hung a small card on a tree. On my card, I wrote, "Grow tall and strong!" I know that our trees are still small. But I think that they will grow tall in a few years. I hope that students will rest under them on hot afternoons. I also hope that birds will build nests in the branches. Next spring, we will come back to check on our trees.
