Last Friday, over three hundred people watched the drama club's fall play. It was about an old fisherman lost at sea in a storm. At the end, the audience cheered for the actors. However, most of them never learned the names of the students working behind the stage. Our reporters talked with four of these hidden helpers.

The first is Seulgi Cha, the stage manager. During the show, she sat beside the stage with a headset and a notebook. Through the headset, she told the crew exactly when to change each light and sound. "I try to stay as calm as a lake," she said. "If I panic, everyone panics."

Arlo Ellis planned the lights. Before the show, he climbed a tall ladder to point each lamp at the right spot. He also put sheets of colored plastic in front of some lamps. The blue light covering the stage in the last scene came from a sheet as thin as paper.

Taegyu Noh made the sounds of the storm by hand. The rain falling on the fisherman's boat was really dried beans rolling in a box. For thunder, he shook a sheet of metal. "My thunder is not as loud as real thunder," he said, "but it still makes the actors jump."

Greta Lowe's costume team made twenty-six costumes, twice as many as the club made last year. In the second act, one actor had forty seconds to change from a sailor into a king. Greta waited in the dark with the robe and the crown. "We practiced that change as often as the actors practiced their lines," she said.

None of these students appeared on the stage, but their work was in every scene. The next time you watch a play here, look at the dark corner beside the stage. Someone wearing a headset will probably be sitting there.
