For many people, a childhood interest stays a hobby. For others, it slowly grows into a job. Our magazine talked with three of these people. Kang Seojin is an aquarium keeper, Oliver Grant is a food stylist, and Lim Chaewon designs sounds for video games.
Ms. Kang, can you tell us how you became an aquarium keeper?
As a child, I spent hours watching the fish in my grandfather's tank. I wanted to know why some fish swam in large groups. Later, I studied biology in college. Now I feed the animals, check their health, and clean their tanks. Keeping the water clean is the most important part of my work. Feeding the sharks still makes me nervous, but I love what I do.
Mr. Grant, can you explain what a food stylist does?
I prepare food for photos in cookbooks and advertisements. As a boy, I loved cooking and drawing, so I later studied both. Bright colors make a dish attractive, so I choose plates and sauces with care. Food dries quickly under hot studio lights. To keep vegetables fresh, I spray them with cold water. People often ask me whether the food in my photos is real, and it usually is.
Ms. Lim, how did music and games lead you to your job?
As a teenager, I played the piano and loved video games. I often wondered how game makers created the sounds of dragons and swords. In college, I studied music and computer programming. Today I record everyday sounds and change them on my computer. For example, I once made the sound of a dragon's wings with an old umbrella. Soft music keeps players calm in a peaceful village, and a sudden noise makes a dark cave scary.
All three gave the same advice: notice what makes you curious, and learn the skills that go with it. Your hobby today might become your job someday.
