The best possible sort of system into which to weave an object, mentally, is a _rational_ system, or what is called a 'science.' Place the thing in its pigeon-hole in a classificatory series; explain it logically by its causes, and deduce from it its necessary effects; find out of what natural law it is an instance,--and you then know it in the best of all possible ways. A 'science' is thus the greatest of labor-saving contrivances. It relieves the memory of an immense number of details, replacing, as it does, merely contiguous associations by the logical ones of identity, similarity, or analogy. If you know a 'law,' you may discharge your memory of masses of particular instances, for the law will reproduce them for you whenever you require them. The law of refraction, for example: If you know that, you can with a pencil and a bit of paper immediately discern how a convex lens, a concave lens, or a prism, must severally alter the appearance of an object. But, if you don't know the general law, you must charge your memory separately with each of the three kinds of effect.

- concave 오목한 가운데가 안으로 들어간 모양입니다. 반대는 convex.
- contiguous 서로 붙어 있는, 인접한 여기서는 논리적 연결이 없이 그저 가까이 있을 뿐인 기억의 연결을 말합니다.
- convex 볼록한 가운데가 밖으로 튀어나온 모양입니다. 반대는 concave.
- deduce 끌어내다, 추론하다 알려진 원리에서 결론을 끌어내는 것입니다. 명사는 deduction.
- discern 알아내다, 분별하다 똑똑히 보고 알아차리는 것입니다. 명사는 discernment.
- immense 엄청난 아주 크거나 셀 수 없이 많다는 뜻입니다.
- labor 노동, 수고 labor-saving 은 수고를 덜어 주는. 영국식 철자는 labour.
- logically 논리적으로 까닭과 결과의 차례에 따라서라는 뜻입니다.
- merely 그저, 단지 only 와 같은 뜻입니다. 여기서는 '그저 가까이 붙어 있을 뿐인'.
- pigeon 비둘기 pigeon-hole 은 비둘기장처럼 칸칸이 나뉜 서류 칸이고, 여기서는 '분류 칸' 이라는 뜻입니다.
- prism 프리즘 빛을 꺾어 나누는 삼각 기둥 모양의 유리입니다.
- refraction 굴절 빛이 다른 물질로 들어갈 때 꺾이는 현상입니다. 동사는 refract.
- reproduce 다시 만들어 내다 여기서는 법칙이 개별 사례를 다시 끌어내 준다는 뜻입니다. '번식하다' 라는 뜻도 있습니다.
- severally 각각, 따로따로 옛스러운 격식 낱말입니다. 지금은 separately 나 each 를 더 씁니다.
- similarity 비슷함, 유사성 similar 의 명사입니다. 반대는 difference.
- weave 짜다, 짜 넣다 실로 천을 짜듯 여러 가지를 하나의 체계로 엮는 것입니다.
