Our class chose to perform "Stone Soup" at the school festival. Our class president, Junseo, gave everyone a job. Eight of us became actors, and the rest joined the set team. Iseo was in charge of the props.

After school, both groups needed the back of the classroom. During a rehearsal, Hector walked backward across our wet painting of a village. His shoes left gray footprints that could not be washed off. The set team blamed the actors, and the actors blamed the huge painting. After that, the two groups ate lunch at different tables. Junseo said that the room should be shared and wrote a schedule, but nobody followed it. I wondered if our play would ever reach the stage.

Iseo never said which group was right. She ate lunch with the actors one day and with the set team the next. One evening, she quietly painted small stones around each footprint. Later, she showed the soup pot to both groups. "I wonder if this pot can be seen clearly from the back row," she said. Nobody knew, so both groups went to the gym together. From the last row, the pot looked as small as a teacup. The set team offered to make a bigger pot, and the actors helped.

On festival day, the audience laughed when the hungry traveler dropped the stone into the giant pot. Hector walked along a stone path in our village and winked at me. Iseo handed out the props from behind the curtain. At the end, Junseo thanked both teams.

I used to think a class needed only a strong leader at the front. Now I believe that a class needs someone who connects people as much as someone who leads them. That kind of work cannot be seen by the audience, but it must still be done. I still wonder if Iseo knows how much she did for us.
