You walk into a stationery store to buy one pen. Twenty minutes later, you walk out with a pen, two stickers, and a notebook with a cute cover. What happened? Most stores use simple tricks which lead students to spend more money than they planned. If you know these tricks, you can keep more money in your wallet.
The first trick waits for you at the counter. While you stand in line to pay, you see candy, key rings, and tiny erasers. Each of these items costs only a little, so many students pick one up without thinking. Small prices add up quickly, and the store earns a lot from them.
The second trick is a deal which seems too good to miss. A sign that says "Buy two, get one free" makes three notebooks look cheap. However, a deal saves money only when you need every item in it. If you need just one notebook, buy just one. Otherwise, you spend extra money on paper which will sit in a drawer for months.
The third trick is about where products sit on the shelves. At eye level, right where your eyes land first, stores place the items which bring in the most money. Cheaper choices are often on the top or bottom shelf. If you look up and down before you choose, you may find a similar item for a lower price.
So how does a smart shopper respond? A smart shopper is someone who makes a plan before entering the store. Write a short list at home and set a limit on what you will spend. If something is not on your list, put it back and wait a day. If you still want it the next day, you can come back for it. Stores will always have their tricks, but students who have a plan stay in control of their money.
