This is one of Aesop's fables. It is a very old story with a simple lesson.
One summer, there was no rain for many weeks. The streams dried up, and the grass turned brown. One hot afternoon, a thirsty crow flew over a small village. Her wings felt heavy, and her throat was dry. Then she saw a tall pitcher next to a garden gate. What a lucky day it was!
The crow flew down to the pitcher and looked inside. There was some water, but it was at the very bottom. She pushed her beak into the narrow neck, but she could not reach the water. Next, she tried to knock the pitcher over, but it did not move. How heavy that pitcher was!
The crow sat on the gate and thought for a while. Then she noticed some small stones on the path. She picked up one stone in her beak and dropped it into the pitcher. The water rose a tiny bit. She carried another stone, and then another. When the sun went down, the water was near the top. At last, the crow drank the cool water.
How clever the crow was! She did not have a long beak or strong wings, but she had a good idea. When one way does not work, stop and think of another way. That is the lesson of this old story.

- beak (새의) 부리 새의 딱딱하고 뾰족한 입. 이 글에서 까마귀는 부리로 돌을 집어 나른다.
- crow 까마귀 온몸이 검은 큰 새. 이 이야기의 주인공이다.
- fable 우화 동물이 사람처럼 말하고 행동하며 교훈을 주는 짧은 이야기. Aesop's fables = 이솝 우화.
- neck (병의) 목 병에서 입구 쪽의 좁은 부분. 사람이나 동물의 '목'이라는 뜻도 있다.
- pitcher 물병, 주전자 물을 담아 따르는 손잡이 달린 병. 야구에서는 '투수'라는 뜻도 있다.
- thirsty 목마른 thirst(목마름)에 -y 를 붙인 말. be thirsty = 목이 마르다. hungry(배고픈)와 짝을 이루는 말이다.
