A finished painting can hide more than it shows. Painters sometimes reused old canvases or changed their plans as they worked, covering earlier ideas with fresh paint. Today, X-rays and infrared light allow conservators to look beneath the surface without removing a single flake of paint. The two methods, however, reveal different things.

X-rays pass through most materials, but heavy elements such as lead block them. Lead white, which contains the heavy metal lead, blocks X-rays much more strongly than paints made from lighter elements. The parts of a painting that are rich in lead white therefore look bright in an X-ray image. Because X-rays pass through every layer, a single image shows a hidden picture and the surface picture on top of each other.

Infrared light behaves differently. Many paints let infrared light pass through, so the light reaches the pale layer under the paint and bounces back to a special camera. Carbon, however, absorbs infrared light. As a result, sketch lines drawn with charcoal or other materials that contain carbon look dark in an infrared image. This contrast enables experts to see the underdrawing, the sketch that an artist made before painting began.

In 2022, experts at the National Galleries of Scotland X-rayed Head of a Peasant Woman, which Vincent van Gogh painted in 1885. The X-ray image revealed a self-portrait on the back of the canvas: a bearded man in a hat. Layers of glue and cardboard had hidden it for more than a century. Van Gogh, who often reused canvases to save money, sometimes painted on the back of an old canvas instead of covering its front.

Infrared light has uncovered changes of plan as well. In 2005, infrared images of Leonardo da Vinci's The Virgin of the Rocks, which belongs to the National Gallery in London, revealed a drawing beneath the paint. The drawing showed a completely different design, so Leonardo must have begun one composition and then given it up for the one we see today.

Discoveries like these help historians to follow an artist's thinking step by step. They also encourage museum visitors to see a painting as a record of many choices rather than a single finished moment.
