The typhoon reached our town late on a Saturday night in August. Rain beat against the windows, and the wind roared between the buildings. At about ten, every light in our apartment went out at once. My little brother, Seungwoo, screamed and grabbed my arm.

Back in March, Mom had packed an emergency bag and hung it on a hook by the front door. She had filled it with bottled water, crackers, chocolate bars, a first-aid kit, and a small radio. She had also packed five flashlights, one more than the four of us needed. At the time, I had laughed and called it "Mom's camping bag." During exam week in May, I had even taken the chocolate bars out for late-night snacks.

Since the bag always hung in the same place, I found it in the dark within seconds. Mom stayed calm and handed a flashlight to each of us. Since Seungwoo was still shaking, Mom let him hold the biggest one. Dad turned on the radio and listened for news about the storm.

Then Dad remembered Mrs. Seol, who lived alone across the hall. He took the fifth flashlight to her door. When he knocked, Mrs. Seol had already searched every kitchen drawer for candles. She had not found a single one. She held the flashlight with both hands and thanked him three times.

Since nobody could sleep, we sat together on the rug and told stories. When Mom opened the bag's snack pocket, she found only crackers. Seungwoo looked at me, and I looked down at the floor. Still, the crackers tasted wonderful, and the wind slowly grew quieter.

The power came back a little after five the next morning. That afternoon, I put two new chocolate bars into the bag. Now I check the bag every season, and nobody calls it a camping bag anymore.
