Ludwig Guttmann was born in Germany in 1899 and became a leading doctor in the field of brain and nerve disorders. During the years when the Nazis ruled Germany, however, Jewish people like him faced harsh persecution. In 1939, he and his family fled to Britain, where he did research at a hospital in Oxford for several years.
The Second World War left large numbers of soldiers and civilians with serious injuries. Injuries to the spinal cord were among the worst, because they can leave a person unable to move or feel parts of the body. At that time, many patients with these injuries died from complications such as bedsores. In 1944, at the request of the British government, Guttmann opened a center for spinal injuries at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England. He saw his patients not as people waiting to die but as people who could return to active lives. His team healed their sores, trained them to sit up, and taught them to use wheelchairs.
Guttmann also believed that physical movement was the key to recovery. For him, sport was not a mere pastime but a serious form of treatment. The reason why he introduced archery, for example, was that he found it excellent for building muscles. Sport also gave patients an interest in life and helped them return to society. In time, sport at the hospital grew from a part of treatment into real competition.
On July 29, 1948, the day when the Olympic Games opened in London, Guttmann held a competition for wheelchair athletes at the hospital. Sixteen men and women took part in archery, and he named the event the Stoke Mandeville Games. In 1952, Dutch veterans joined the competition, and it became an international event. In 1960, the year when Rome hosted the Olympic Games, the competition was held in that city soon after the Olympics ended. Hundreds of athletes from more than twenty countries took part, and that event is now regarded as the first Paralympic Games.
Guttmann died in 1980, but the Paralympic Games continue to take place every four years. Their story began not in a great stadium but in a hospital.
