Drop an ice cube into a cold drink, and it bobs at the surface instead of sinking to the bottom. It is easy for us to overlook how strange this everyday sight really is. Rarely does the solid form of a substance float on top of its own liquid. For most substances, a solid chunk weighs more than an equal volume of the liquid, so the chunk sinks. Water is a striking exception, and this odd behavior helps living things survive the winter in lakes and ponds.
To see why, we need the idea of density, which tells us how much matter is packed into a given space. Like most liquids, water becomes denser as it cools, so cold water sinks below warm water. At about 4°C, however, water reaches its greatest density. Seldom does a liquid expand as it grows colder, yet water does exactly that below this temperature. When water freezes at 0°C, its molecules lock into an open pattern that holds them farther apart. As a result, ice is about 9 percent less dense than liquid water, so it floats.
Water's unusual behavior shapes the way a lake freezes. In autumn, cold air chills the surface water, which becomes denser and sinks. This sinking continues until the whole lake has cooled to about 4°C. From then on, it is hard for the colder surface water to sink, since this water is less dense than the water beneath it. The cold water stays on top instead, and ice begins to form there.
Not only does the ice float, but it also acts as a lid over the lake. Because the ice shields the water from the freezing air, it is much harder for heat to escape from the water below. In many deep lakes, the water just under the ice stays near 0°C, while the water near the bottom stays close to 4°C. Fish, plants, and other living things can therefore remain in liquid water all winter. Even so, it is not easy for fish to find enough food and oxygen under the ice. Many fish slow down and rest through the cold months.
The next time an ice cube bobs in your drink, remember that this odd property protects whole lakes full of life every winter.
