Today my family began a summer journey to Toronto, Canada. We came to visit my aunt, who moved there ten years ago. She lives with my uncle and my cousin Noah, who is a year older than I am. After a long flight, we landed in the early evening, but in Seoul it was already the next morning. My body was confused because it did not know which clock to follow. At eleven at night, my aunt turned off the lights. In Toronto, it was time to sleep, but in Seoul, it was time to eat lunch. It was no wonder that my eyes stayed wide open.

July 31

I woke up before dawn and could not fall asleep again. I was the only person who was awake in the house, so I sat alone in the kitchen. Later, Noah came downstairs and handed me an old watch which showed two times at once. "Keep it," he said. "Now you can check Seoul time whenever you miss home." In the afternoon, we took a ferry to the Toronto Islands, which lie in Lake Ontario just off the city's downtown. From the ferry, the huge buildings of the city looked like toys. Noah and I rode bikes until sunset, and for a while, I forgot how sleepy I was.

August 5

Our week in Toronto went by too quickly. At the airport, Dad looked at the clock and said, "It's time to say goodbye." My aunt hugged me for a long time, and Noah promised to visit Seoul next summer. On the plane, the watch showed a quarter past ten in the morning in Toronto and a quarter past eleven at night in Seoul. Thirteen hours still separate our two homes, but the distance no longer feels so great. Whenever I look at the watch, I can picture what Noah is doing on the other side of the world.
