After a long school day, does your neck feel stiff? Do your shoulders hurt when you take off your backpack? Students often sit for hours, so small aches like these are common. However, a few simple habits can help. This guide explains how to sit, when to stretch, and how to carry your bag.

First, sit all the way back so that the chair supports your whole back. Keep both feet flat on the floor. If they do not reach the floor, rest them on a small box. Reading with your book flat on the desk makes your neck sore because the neck muscles must work hard to hold up your head. Instead, raise your book on a stand or a pile of thick books.

Second, do not sit still for too long. Your muscles become tight because they stay in the same position. Most students know that short breaks are important, but they often do not know when to stretch. Here is an easy rule: every time you finish one subject, stand up before you begin the next one. Roll your shoulders back slowly five times. Then reach both arms toward the ceiling and hold the stretch for a few seconds. After that, gently turn your head to the left and to the right. The whole routine takes about a minute.

Third, think about what to pack in your backpack. Every evening, take out anything you will not need the next day. Put the heaviest books closest to your back. Always wear the bag on both shoulders. When a bag hangs from one shoulder, your body leans to one side because all the weight pulls on that side. Also, tighten the straps so that the bag sits high and close to your back.

These habits do not take much time. Practice them every day, and soon they will feel natural.
