My grandmother takes an art class at the senior center near our apartment. One afternoon last spring, I went there to walk her home. In the lobby, an old man was showing his phone to a staff member. "My grandson sent me a video, but I can't play it," he said. The staff member was too busy to help him, so the old man went home.

That evening, I told my friend Eunsol what I had seen. Although we were nervous, we went to see the director of the center. She gave us a small table in the lobby for two hours every Wednesday after school. We put a sign on it: "Phone Help Desk."

Although our sign was large, nobody stopped at our table on the first day. Finally, Mrs. Min from my grandmother's class said what the others were thinking. "We don't like to accept help without giving something back," she explained.

The next week, Eunsol added a second line to our sign: "Teach Us Something, Too!" Mrs. Min taught us how to hold a brush, and we showed her how to send voice messages. Soon, the old man from the lobby sat down at our table. His name was Mr. Shin, and he used to teach math.

At first, I pressed the buttons for him to save time. A week later, however, he had forgotten every step. What he needed was a chance to press each button himself. So Eunsol wrote the steps on cards in large letters, one card for each task. Her first card showed how to play a video in a text message.

By June, Mr. Shin no longer needed that card, although he still kept it in his wallet. Now he checks our math homework every Wednesday, and Mrs. Min still corrects the way we hold our brushes.
