Harriet Tubman was born into slavery around 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, and her parents named her Araminta Ross. From childhood, she was forced to work in the region's fields, forests, and marshes, where she learned to read the land and the stars. After marrying a free man, she changed her name to Harriet Tubman.

In 1849, her enslaver died, and Tubman learned that she was in danger of being sold away from her family. That fall, she escaped alone, traveling by night, following the North Star, and relying on directions from Black and white helpers along the way. Although a reward was offered for her capture, she crossed into Pennsylvania, which was a free state, and reached the city of Philadelphia. There she soon found support among Black and white abolitionists, yet her freedom felt incomplete. Many of the people she loved were still enslaved in Maryland, and she later explained her feelings in a few words: "I was free, and they should be free." She resolved to go back for them.

Over the next ten years, Tubman made more than a dozen trips back to Maryland, leading dozens of people north, including her brothers and her elderly parents. Each trip was made riskier by the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which required the arrest of anyone suspected of having escaped. No longer could freedom seekers feel safe in the North, so Tubman took some of them across the border into Canada.

Her journeys depended on the Underground Railroad, which was not a real railroad but a secret network of people and safe houses. Free and enslaved Black people passed along news about routes, while Black and white sympathizers hid freedom seekers in their homes. Only with such trusted helpers could she move people safely from one hiding place to the next. Not only did she guide people herself, but she also gave detailed instructions to many others whom she could not accompany. Her success earned her the nickname "Moses," after the biblical leader who led his people out of slavery.

In 1896, she spoke proudly of her rescue work: "I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." Her story shows that leading others to freedom took courage, careful planning, and trust in her helpers.
