기준에서 벗어난 쪽을 가리키는 단어 other를 형태 기준으로 아래와 같이 정리합니다.

1. other — 기준에서 벗어난 ‘다른’

other + 명사 : 방금 말한 것 말고 / 추가로 / 같은 범주를 유지한 채 다른 것

I like this phone. Show me the other one.  (이 폰 말고, 같은 종류의 다른 폰 하나.)

Two other passengers were injured. (승객 두 명 더.)

Other students stayed after class. (방금 말한 학생들 말고 다른 학생들.)

other와 different는 다르다

other는 ‘선택’입니다. different는 ‘비교’입니다.
두 단어는 한국어로는 모두 ‘다른’이지만, 영어 사고에서는 완전히 다릅니다.

This phone is different from mine. (성질이 다르다.)

I’m a different person now. (이전과 성격이 달라졌다.)

2. others — 다른 것들 / 사람들

The others came later. (다른 사람들 / 나머지는 나중에 왔다.)

3. the other — 기준에서 벗어난 그 대상

둘이 명시된 경우 → 나머지

There are only two phones here.
I like this one. Show me the other one. (둘 중 남은 하나.)

집합이 명시되지 않은 경우 → 기준에서 벗어난 그 다른 것

I like this phone. Show me the other one. (이 폰 말고, 같은 종류의 다른 것 하나.)

4. the others — 기준에서 벗어난 그 집합

Some people left early.
The others stayed behind. (일찍 간 사람들 말고 나머지 전부)

People were talking loudly in the hall.
The others were waiting quietly inside. (복도에서 떠들던 사람들 말고 안에서 조용히 기다리던 다른 사람들)

5. 특이한 표현 / 관용적 표현

other than : ~외에는

I didn’t do it other than to help you.

every other : 하나 걸러

I go to the gym every other day.

in other words : 다시 말해

It’s predictable. In other words, boring.

at some time or other : 언젠가

We’ll meet again at some time or other.

for some reason or other : 어째서인지

For some reason or other, he didn’t reply.

each other / one another : 서로

They trust each other.

the other day / evening : 지난번

I saw her the other day.

6. other people vs. the other person / another person

other는 집합이 전제될 때만 자연스럽게 쓰입니다. 그래서 단수 명사 person 앞에는 other를 단독으로 쓰지 않습니다. 따라서 other person은 틀리고, 이미 둘이 설정된 경우에는 the other person, 새로 하나를 추가할 때는 another person을 사용합니다.

Two people were waiting.
One was angry. The other person was calm. (둘이 이미 설정되어 있으므로 가능)

There were many people outside.
Other people were still inside. (people이라는 집합이 있으므로 가능)
